I was sent a letter for a $26 delinquent per-capita tax. Don't know if I owe it or not, but have a validation letter ready to send off.
    (30 days up next week).

Really don't mind paying the $26 to make it go away, but don't want a reporting. (not currently reporting).

    Pay it? Dispute it? Both?

    Thx

One thing to keep in mind is that taxes are not considered debts under the FDCPA.

While, there may be concerns about debt validity and whether the taxes were previously paid, the request for validation doesn't carry the same benefits as with a consumer debt.

If the CA purchased the debts, would it then be a consumer debt? (no longer a tax debt?)

Nope, the definition of a debt, goes by what it was originally.
