$52 charge-off on Bank of America credit card

    Hi--

I'm hoping to get some advice on how to get a $52 charge-off removed from my credit report. I originally had a credit card through Schwab, who after several years sold my card account on to Bank of America. After a year, BoA changed the terms of my card so I stopped using it. Several months later, I moved to Europe and put the unused card aside. In the meanwhile, an automated charge occurred on my account and this went unnoticed until I came back to the US a few weeks ago. The upshot was BoA charged off my account and gave me a black mark in my credit.

The long and the short of it this single ding is worth 70 points on my credit record and will cost me big bucks as I go to find a mortgage in a very expensive US housing market. I routinely charge-- and pay off-- several thousand dollars per month so I have an otherwise unblemished history.

Anyone have advice, or personal experience with Bank of America charge-offs?

The best approach would be to try a goodwill letter to BoA.

    Especially under the circumstances.

Try calling in and explaining the situation in a calm, respectful manner and let them know it was an honest mistake.

The lady on the phone was understanding, but didn't know what could be done to resolve the problem. She forwarded the request on to the internal "Research and Dispute" unit, to which I also sent a goodwill follow-up letter. I'll update this thread with results once I hear back.

I think you have took the best possible step. Having dealt with BoA plenty of times, they receive a bad rap from a lot of people. A number of times it has been deserved, but both myself and people I have helped before were able to get through to them. You just do not want to make the mistake of talking to people who are unable to help you (always go higher up the chain)

So, did the goodwill letter end up working?

I never heard back from them. Just reinforces my desire never to have anything to do with them again.

Curious Kubark42 if you were ever able to get the charge-off removed from your credit reports. Did you hear back from Bank of America at some point in response to your goodwill letter?

No, never did. I eventually found a bank which recognized the silliness of the impact on my credit score and gave me as good a rate as could be found.

Call Bank of America and see if they will remove the item from reporting if you pay the $52

Oh Man! That even sounds like magic!! I am a believer that this can happen to anyone and it will all be undone if I pray hard enough after emailing him to fix my Credit files. I will be especially glad because I just maxed out all my cards at the mall and have a HUGE case of buyers remorse! Thank you for sending this miracle our way!! So excited now as I sit and wait for his reply... :D:)
