I haven't gotten my new Citi Platinum Select or my AAdvantage Gold cards yet, but I've been looking on the Citi website trying to decide what to do.

I know from reading other posts here that I can call and ask that the AAdvantage Gold be combined with my Platinum Select card, leaving room to apply for more Citi cards in the future. I don't know the terms of the Gold card yet, but I see from the website there is a pretty hefty annual fee, while there is none for the Platinum Select. I probably won't charge enough on the account to earn enough airline miles to get a free ticket before I'd pay enough in annual fees to have just purchased a ticket.

I guess the other option I have other than keeping the card or combining it is to upgrade it to the Platinum Select World AAdvantage card. The website makes it seem like this is almost an automatic upgrade if I were to call. Is there any advantage to carrying a World card over a Platinum? I know about the business of the no pre-set spending limit. I'd have a revolving limit and would have to pay in full any charges over that limit. Since I am getting the Amex green card, I don't see me needing to ever use the World card in that manner.

    What should I do?

    DaveLV,
I encountered the same problem with the gold card...it was $85/yr vs the silver $50/yr and offers no more advantage for moderate chargers so I called the reps when I got it and I said "I don't think I will be travelling much and did not know, I would like a lower or no fee card, can you change this into platinum select?"

She did right on the spot, made it Plat Select Dividend no fee and 1% dividends and had a much better APR, told me to cut the gold card up and could she do anything else for me? I said well, no not that I can think of and that was that.

So, wait till you get the card, before you activate it call Citi CS and say "you applied for the AA card thinking you would be travelling and now you think you do not need the AA dividends (the airline miles) and would like a no fee card like the platinum select" and they will do it on the spot no questions asked. They will have to issue you a new card and number since the gold and plat select are different banks but they will do it without even questioning you or your file or your history etc...NO questions asked.

Then in 6 mos apply for another silver AA card combine it with your Plat Select and do it again and again.

Since I'm already going to be getting a Platinum Select, should I just combine the Gold with it? Or should I get a second Platinum Select? That Dividends card does seem nice.

When you call they will tell you whether you can combine or not...but I think you can not combine the GOLD with the Plat select, you must convert first (strange but true) but they CAN DO IT ALL in one swoop it is just semantics for the purposes of this board...but the Silver and the Plat select CAN be combined WITHOUT converting first...sounds weird but the numbers and logo for the silver and plat select are different from the gold.

When you call tell them you have a Plat Select and a GOLDAA card...you do not think you will need the benefits of the AA Gold card and would like to combine the two or convert to Plat Select Dividends then combine...they will tell you how but they WILL do it for you.

Sam and Saar clued me in on how receptive Citi CS is to help you through this, but they really are nice and helpful about the whole thing.

I iniatially applied for the CITI plat. select before reading this board. I then read the board regarding applying for multiple CITI cards then convert, combine, etc. One day later I was approved for the CITI AA gold. I waited a week until I rec'd both cards and called the Gold AA CS dept. They said I could combine possibly (they would have to check) but then offered me 10.99% and no fee on the Gold aa to stay. Heck, I could only negotiate the Platinum down to 11.99%. They both have a $5,500 limit......
