AMEX after bankruptcy

    Hello.

First, let me say that this is a great message board...I've learned a lot from reading the information here :)

    Now my question....

I filed bankruptcy in 1991 and included an AMEX Green Card account (about $6000). Since then, I've never missed a payment on anything, and my bankruptcy has fallen off my reports.

I was wondering if I would be approved for an AMEX card at this point if I applied today... I just received a pre-approved letter from them today. I'd hate to apply and get an inquiry if I'm not going to be approved. I heard that AMEX has a very long memory....True?

    Thanks for any assistance.

From what I understand, AMEX has a black list. So even if your bk has fallen off, AMEX will compare your SS# to their list and see that you bked on them. Which will lead to a denial.

I'm not sure if you can paid them off and start fresh with them. You have to think if repaying a 6k debt is worth getting a AMEX card.

    Best regards,

There are alot of threads on Amex blacklist, but search is sooooooo sloooooooow.

    --------
Don't apply based on this statement:

Just the other day, someone posted that a 'pre-approval' from Amex is guaranteed, or something like that.
    -------

I paid them (400+), and was told to wait a year to apply.

I don't know what they would do in your situation (BK), but good luck!!!!

I could be wrong, but I think the pre-approvals are "guaranteed" if you are already an Amex cardholder. If I remember what I have read, the old debt will need to be paid before they will allow a new acct.

Yes!! I found the link. According to what someone in the link said, it is for current card-holders.

Thank you for clearing that up for me :)

DH filed BK in 1987. In 2001 they would not even let him be an AU on my card!

Amex rules on BK (as of last month's discussion with a new accounts person)...

    1. No unpaid debt with any Amex subsuduary (any card, corporate card, or credit line). Blacklist will be checked. If old debt is paid in full, you can then be considered.

    2. BK must be completely off your report (10 years for Ch 7, 7 years for Ch13). Former policy of supervisory overview at 5 years was stopped.

    I would save the inquiry.

I spoke with someone pretty high up at AMEX 6 weeks ago.

You're right about the bk. It cannot show on your report (they use EQ). But the 10 yr/7 yr part doesn't matter to them. If you can somehow get the bk off your report sooner, and you qualify otherwise, you'll get the card. They don't care if your bk was last year. It just cannot show on your report.

This is easy. Go ahead and apply. You may be on the blacklist or you may not be. There are cracks in it ') and not everyone hits it every time.

If you're on the list, they won't even pull your credit. The application stops right there. If you're not on it and you don't have a bk on your credit report ... it's yours.

try it and see what happens

Thanks for all the advice... I'm going to go for it and apply.

I was just thinking: If AMEX was a little smarter, they would save the money on postage/application process by running the pre-approvals through the blacklist file before wasting the money to mail them out.
