    Centurion Card

I've heard that AMEX only gives this card to "select platinum card members." Does the word "select" mean people with perfect platinum history or those who travel a lot or both? I feel that this card is only useful if you travel a lot otherwise the annual fee ($1,000) wouldn't be worth it.

    Re: Centurion Card

They offer it to people with platinum, and to the ones that have a very high spending pattern. They know who is qualified for this type of card. All they have to do is get an updated credit report, and look at the payment history track record. They are surely not going to select someone that is only paying minimum due only on all credit accounts. They want very responsible customers.

How about the people who only charge a total of about $400-$500 per month and always pay in full on all cards? I don't think this is a high spending pattern, but the bills are paid in full every month.

    Re: Centurion Card

The Centurion card is strictly reserved for the elite---high profile people (CEO's, HollyWood Stars, people who fly the Concord, and other rich people that make over $250,000 and travel all the time) There are about 800,000 platinum cardmembers in the US, and about 8,000 Centurion cardholders in the US--thus onlyabout 1% qualify for the card.

Saw a TV ad? Who and when? What station. That cannot be.

    Centurion Card

Just curious, why did they make this card black? I guess AMEX ran out of designs (green, gold, platinum (silver) ). I think they should have made a glow in the dark design. MBNA already patented the translucent design for the Quantum card, so I guess they couldn't make a translucent AMEX Centurion card.

    Re: Centurion Card

There was or is talk of a "white" card. Not sure why they chose black. Might be because they already had blue rolled out in Europe. Also, the centurion card was first introduced in Europe with black cardstock. I think they did it to be different---no other card has been black before. If you notice it is the reverse image of the platinum card--what is black is silver and what it silver is black. I think it looks cool.

    Jason,

So there are 800,000 Platinum cardholders and 8,000 Centurion cardholders. That doesn't mean that only 1% of the Platinum cardholders qualify, but rather that only 1% of them accept the Centurion card. There could be a few, or even a lot, of Platinum cardholders who are offered the card but don't want to pay $1000 a year for its perceived benefits.

    RichGuy,

True indeed... Old money cares not of "perceived" things. Especially, charge cards... They just do not care..

New money, however, is quite the opposite. they like to show everyone everything...
