Ok so I am currently 24 years old and am trying to fix my credit. I have a few items well one store credit card and a past due library book that has I was very ruthless about 2 years ago that may have dinked my credit because I didn't pay them off however I have paid a 2500 dollar loan and currently have a college credit card in which I pay for on time and 3x the minimum amount at least. My question is will paying for my way past due items give me some way to find ground to better credit again, I know I shouldn't leave it unpaid, and I'm getting around to paying them now a days since now I currently have a second job, however I dont want to pay for something that won't affect it much. Please help my credit score is in the low 500s.

Welcome to the forum! As i am sure that you will likely receive a bunch of opinions on how and why to do certain things there is much reasoning of why and in what order you need to do things.

I dispise when anyone tells someone to dispute online as it will and has for many people yeilded unfavorable results as your stuck using the format that the EVIL credit reporting agency wants you to follow and use. By disputing by mail only you allow yourself to provide proof of Items anyway

As you begin your credit repair i am sure you will come across the reasoning behind why certain things need to be done in an order. I DO NOT dispute over the internet or online EVER! There is solid reasoning behind why which i wont go into but if you need to know I can go into that later.

If your truely serious about credit repair it helps to first limit your exposure if thats the right word of who is collecting, mining and selling your data.

Step 1. OPT-OUT it can be done over the phone or at https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t

    Wait at least 7 days

Step 2. Get a PAPER copy of EACH of your reports strait from the reporting agency.I just call their phone numbers and order over the phone and have them sent to your house.

Step 3. Go to the information section of your report go over it with a fine tooth comb you will be disputing any and all inaccuracies that you find. ONLY on the information PAGE at this time.

DO your absolute best to dispute any addresses on your report you have not lived at in the last 2 years.

FYI-If you have debts connected to you report through an old address this is one reason we dispute all old address.
If you dont know how the geographical location codes or name identification numbers of your report work then you need to do more reading on here but dont feel bad because there is plenty of people on here that dont understand the HOW and WHY things are done.

my letter looks something like this.

Attention: Experian (Have written one for Experian,Transunion, Equifax)

My name is xxxxxxxxxx, attached is a copy of data page of my Experian report number XXXX-XXXX-XX.

Upon receiving this I have noticed some errors that need to
    be corrected/removed

I have attached a copy of the data page with the addresses circled
in red. I am informing you that the addressees of:

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-address 1

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-address 2

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-address 2

The above addresses are invalid and need them removed. I am
    concerned about ID theft/fraud.

In addition to the address section located under the
    telephone number section:

    xxx-xxx-xxxx

    xxx-xxxx-xxxx

Both of these are invalid as well. The number xxx-xxx-xxxx
    is the correct number.

I have included a copy of my driver’s license, a copy of my
SS card and copy of a current utility bill as proof of the items.

    Thank You,

    XXXXXXXXXX

You will be sending this in the mail CERTIFIED MAIL without a RR once once you get the outcome of the first dispute you will either have everthing deleted off your info page thats not you or old addressses, bad info name misspellings ect. They will send you an outcome page of your dispute when its finished. If you still have incorrect information on there repeat this step. but first get a FULL updated copy of your report EXAMPLE: via the small se4ction where u check the box and send back to experian requesting full new updated report and you will start the process over.

Repeat the step using the updated credit report you requested.

Once all errors on your info page are fixed you will begin the next step. When you get to this let me know

FYI more than 30% of all credit reports have errors

Once all that is done the next step you will start the dispute and verification of any and ALL medical collections ONLY on your report. When you are ready to start this let me know.As we will be using a specific process for MEDICAL debts if you have these and you will NOT dispute NON medical things at that time. That will come later! It will take you a month or 2 to get to this step so PM me when your ready! As its hard to follow to much stuff all the time.

PS--DONT PAY THINGS OFF YET AS YOU WILL LOOSE ANY STRONG ARM BARGAINING TACTICS a PAID COLLECTION CAN HAVE ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS as well

First thing you need to do is order your credit reports so you know exactly what you're dealing with. Every consumer is entitled to one report, free, from each bureau every 12 months. Here is the site to order from:

    https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action

Unlike other methods that claim to be free, this one truly is, no CC needed, you will simply have to answer some questions to verify your identity.

Once you received your reports, post what accounts you need help with. Leave out account numbers, your personal data, etc.

Simply paying off collection accounts won't do much for your scores.

If u want to grant 45 days using free credit reports instead if 30 using pay reports it's ur choice but like I said before there is a reason I do everything! Save ur free reports for later!

You can also use Quizzle to get two free credit reports to save you constantly paying for them.

Why do people ask question only to never return?

mechanic, should I use this same outline as you described here for my situation? (from my thread about deleting old items that are not 7 yrs old yet)

It was already suggested to me to clear up name/phone #, personal info first. Should I then focus only on medical negs, saving other negs for later?

I am a strong advocate of always in this order opt out, delete old addresses and info from personal info page, then medical, then remaining items. Don't mix them in any fashion. There is a reasons why
