How many times have you been to the ATM and it has been, "unable to dispense money" or "temporarily out of service"? This costs you time and money..... The banks themselves are saving with the benifit of less tellers. Above and beyond that, the rising cost of ATM fees are allowing for huge profits. I believe it is also fair that a fee be assessed to the institution by the consumer. They have an overwhealming list everything right down to a 'convenience' fee!! What happens when 'WE' are inconvenienced?
Fees in general are growing at an uncontrollable otrageous rate. Just look up some of their profits. Many establishments even cross the line of illegal, hoping no one will 'contest' it. Have you heard of the 'one time courtesy reversal'? If in fact the fee is lawful, why would they offer to reverse it? The banking industry are predators and could truly use some humbling. How can I get a bill started that would allow consumers to charge fees in return? Please give me your thoughts as a Consumer, Bank Manager, Politician etc. This general idea expands into the realm of business overall and without Cosumers there is no busness. More rights on the consumers behalf should increase competition among businesses

Before taking that step... have you talked to your bank? Some have reimbursments for out of service ATMs, waiting too long in line, etc. Many post their policies but sometimes you have to ask.

And if they don't, some banks will make a goodwill effort if this happens to keep your business.

I say it never hurts to bring it up to them.

My wife and I don't pay interest for anything we can avoid. (No credit cards carry a balance, etc.) The other day we found a way to payoff her student loans by doing a balance transfer offer from her Chase credit card. The offer, to our recollection, had no mention of fees associated with it, and it would place the amount at zero interest for 6 months. We had planned to pay it off by then. We were surprised to see a $75 charge for this transaction on our next credit card bill. It's all in the fine print. But I didn't recall seeing the fine print, because surely we would never have incurred a $75 fee on purpose, which would be more than interest had we just kept our account. Anyhow, long story short, we just called them and complained and asked to speak with supervisor and then they told us that they would remove the $75 dollar fee for us.
