Does anyone have any advice about charge-offs? Disputes, Validations, over 2 years old...

I had a charge off with Chase that they sold to NCO. Chase is the only one who has reported it (CA has never contacted me). I sent a letter to Chase offering a settlement of sorts, and it disappeared off my Experian report. I don't have an actual reply from Chase yet. I'm watching the other two to see what happens.

Which way is safer? You didn't ask them to validate the debt?

I disputed it first so that if anyone looked at the credit report it would show as a dispute. I didn't ask them to validate mainly because Chase has been contacting the CRA's every single month (It's 4 1/2 years old). Freaks. But, if they had been silent, I would probably send a validation letter first. After that, I would try a settlement offer. Even if you get denied, keep going up the chain of command. I had to go to Corporate at Sallie Mae before I got some lates removed. I've been having to do quick clean up because I'm interviewing for jobs right now, so I've been hitting the CRA's and known good creditors at the same time. I'm waiting to see if any of the 3 collection accounts I have (all old) clear off on their own before I contact them. So far so good, I've gotten my score up 142 points in the last month.

Are the chargeoffs paid or unpaid?

If they are unpaid, since the creditor, or collection agency, still wants money, accounts are likely to be verified during disputes.

Paid chargeoffs might be a little easier to get removed. But I'm still having difficulty getting that accomplished. I have a paid chargeoff that's come off of Transunion but Experian won't budge. Equifax deleted the item once but then reinserted.

Either way, you're probably in for a challenge. You might want to go back to your original creditor and see if you can work out some kind of a settlement. Perhaps you could get an agreement to pay part of the debt in exchange for deletion. Don't do anything, though, until you get a signed agreement in writing.

When I was struggling with my chargeoff, I hadn't yet discovered this board. My intention all long was to pay it but I couldn't do anything until money started coming in again. At that point, I paid the debt off as quickly as I could. If only I had known about settlements then! Certainly I would have asked for deletion in exchange for payment.

Good luck. If the chargeoffs are still unpaid, maybe you can work something out.
