Does anyone know how hard it is to get these accounts? I'm considering joining up with one or both of these. Do they deny for negatives on say EQ? Not on Chex, Scan, or the like.

    author_22,

All I know, Citibank will check your credit when you open checking. I requested the bronchure from them and they mentioned it on the agreement. Citibank usually check TransUnion and of course it may varies depends where you live.

Chase is not hard to get. They do a chexsystems report and they do NOT pull a credit report. Citibank is really hard to get. I've tried twice and have gotten denied. They pull a chexsystems and a transunion credit report. I am trying to find a way to get approved- maybe at a branch? It doesn't hurt to look into it. Start with Chase! They are very helpful.

I opened a Citi Checking account and when I had 2 listings on chex systems. However, I opened through my company's relationship with them (they had free checking for life, no ATM fees, etc.) so the rep was like ..."well, since you're with them". It left me with the impression that if I was walking into a branch with no affiliation I would have been turned away.

18 months ago I applied for both a citi checking account and a citi secured AA card. One inquiry showed up on TU, one on Equifax (I'm not sure which was for which). Both credit files reflected horrid credit, however, everything was paid and settled.

My application for a checking account was rejected.

I was approved for the secured AA card, however. I just asked and was granted unsecured status.

To my knowledge I did not and do not have any black marks in ChexSystem.

    Hope this helps!

Do you think it would be worth a try to open an account in a branch? My chexsystems is clear, but my transunion has a bk on it. I've tried the citibank online and received letters of denial. I just don't want to be embarrassed at the branch. What do you think mel? Thanks for any suggestions.

What were the reasons for your denial from the online application? Did they pull TU and spot the bk? You may get a sympathetic ear at one of the branches (unless you are in NYC). I wouldn't be to worried about being embarrassed. Ask to speak to one of the financial analysts who sit off to the side or in an office.

What I would probably do is find out the reasons for denial, prepare an argument for why these should be overlooked and then sit down with a a branch manager about opening an account.

Thanks mel for your advice. Yes, I applied twice for a checking account, and it was denied on the basis of a TU report. They said they could not give me specific reasons why. I had a bankruptcy two years ago with no recent derogs. I have two credit cards that are paid in full every month. My chexsystem report is clear-- no bounced checks, etc. This was all done through citibank online. I think your right. Maybe if I go in and talk to an account manager, everything will work out. THANK YOU. Do you have any other suggestions to do this?

LET ME SEE...you check a credit report to "SEE" how you drive...then you check a credit report to "SEE" how you can save...then you check a credit report to "SEE" how you write checks!?!?!?!?!?

    I DON'T SEE THE LOGIC...BUT THEN I'M AN IDIOT...

    I agree George

If I am applying for anything using their money check my credit!
If I am depositing my money with them leave my report the hell alone!

    It like the SS #'s
I am surprised they are not tattooing them on babies now.
