my credit is not so good (just made the 600 club) and my girlfriend's is good...we would to open a checking acct. together and so I am wondering if I should add my name to her acct. with a credit union or go to a conventional bank and open a new acct. is there any advantage to using a credit union...will they pull my credit rating?
    thanks, kris

I have never had a bank pull my credit to open a checking account, unless you are asking for a VISA debit card or a reserve (overdraft protection) line. They will definitely check to see if you have bounced checks in the past using chexsystems, usually.

If you add your name to her existing account, the process should take less time and hassle than if you opened a new account (in my experience anyway). Also, once you're in the door with the joint account, you can always open another individual checking account for yourself.

I just opened a new checking acct with a credit union and they pulled my credit rept. I have a 2 yr old BK7 and scores are in low 600's, I had no problem. I prefer credit unions over banks for many reasons, personal service, little to no fees, etc. Most credit unions are free checking and banks carry fees for almost everything, in my experience. If you have accesss to a credit union, I'd go that route.
