My wife called to upgrade her citibank advantage card to platinum. They told her that her annual fee would be 85 dollars and her apr would go up to 18.9%. Her account is five months old with a limit of 2500 and her balance is 400 and she has never been late making a payment. They said because her card was an American Airlines card they had fixed rates that citibank was contracted to give. What's up with this?

dunno thats whack! Maybe they read this forum :).

Call them back again. Remember citi has a retention department as well.

I switched from 19% AA to 16.9% Platinum select, then called back next week and had retention reduce my rate to prime+2.9%..

By the way, i got this letter today from citi trying to sell me some crap, it said "To our citibank preferred customers". hehe what a load.

Do you have a number for the retention department? If so can I have it? Thanks

    Your Wife's mistake

It seems Your wife worded it wrong more than likely and the rep was just an airhead. You cannot upgrade an american airline card. But you can change the AA card to a non-AA card like the platinum Select. Tell them that you want the platinum select card or dividend card. You should have no problem thereafter..GoodLuck!

The problem a see there is that the C. R. was upgrading her to the
Citi World AAdvantage Platinum Select which has an $85 anual fee.

Call again and tell them that you want the regular Platinum Select (not
the aadvantage). it has no anual fee and a lower interest rate.

But then.. there is no AA Frequent Flyer points to collect either.

By the way, it makes to sense to carry a balance and collect reward points on the same card. The reward usually averages 1-2%... which is the same cost of ONE month of interest. So you lose any benefits in one month of late payment and even further more with each additional month.

So if you are looking for reward collection, do not carry a balance. Then you should not care what the APR is either. Trust me, getting a lower APR card will get you more benefits than any reward card if a balance is usually unavoidable.

the world card is pretty elite. I'd pay $85 for world priviledges hmmm. but then again. i like 11% apr since im starting to roll balances.
