Citibank charge-off

Has anyone had any luck getting a Citibank charge-off removed from their CR?...either through dispute, negotiation, or writing the credit reporting department..

My biggest negative is a Citibank charge-off (11/98) in the amount of $550. They've contracted a collection agency to handle the debt (whom I've never heard from), and won't discuss the debt with me. Citibank is reporting the card to the CR monthly as a charge-off, and there is no entry from the CA. I'd ideally like to pay the debt, and get it removed from my CR. Any ideas how to go about this?

    Thanks!

Dispute the account, make a paper trail, Sue the CRA's. Citibank will NOT negotiate for deletion, i've tried.

..and whatever you do, don't pay it. Just makes verification that much easier...unless you're dealing with experian who can mysteriously verify an account with their telepathic powers.

    How so?

BTW, I don't necessarily disagree w/ that, but given the low amount of the chargeoff, it may be advisable to pay it, if only to be off their black list.

But whatever you do, DON'T PAY THE COLLECTION AGENCY. If you're determined to pay, send a check w/ your account # directly to Citibank (I know they said you can only deal w/ the CA -- disregard it).

Will paying the charge-off remove me from their blacklist? -- I thought I'd still be on since there was a charge-off in the first place.. Then again, they bought one of my accounts from Bank of America after the charge-off..

What if they refuse the payment?

For me, my Citibank charge-off is no longer reporting, but one of the last collection agencies who had the account (Gulf State) is still reporting even though the account comments are showing "Sold to another lender".

The other lender they sold it to is "The Credit Store". I was successful in getting them to drop the issue earlier this year. Gulf State pulled a hard inquiry on my Experian report last September and they were the only company to verify their inquiry dispute last month.

I'm disputing the inquiry again now, and we'll see if they verify when Lexington gets around to disputing their tradeline.

But as far as Citibank goes -- they're not listed on any of my reports.

FYI - as far as their black list goes -- the last time I applied for a Citibank card I was denied for credit reasons, and not for a prior account.

    Dave,

So after you paid the Citibank charge-off, they stopped reporting it? Did you dispute it and have it removed? The CR that supposedly is handling it now hasn't made an entry on my CR's, so maybe there's hope to pay this off and wipe it off..

I've yet to hear about a CCC refusing payment.

But even if they did, you have not worsened your position by offering to pay, if you did it right. Doing it right means endorsing the check, something along the lines of: "Payment is made in goodwill and does not constitute an acknowledgement of debt". This way you're leaving the account at zero balance, without admitting any wrongdoing on your part. This is not what they call "restrictive endorsement", since cashing the check does not restrict the beneficiary's rights in any way.
