    Good evening everyone,

I recently had a weird experience with a credit reporting agency and i am not sure how to handle the situation. In February of 2012 i was in an accident (my fault) in the state of california. As of 2/4/13 the matter had been settled in full (court, restitution, penalties), but i recently pulled my credit report and saw a charge from the California Highway Police for 1293. I called the Collection Agency and was told it was a charge from the CHP and since they had not tried to contact me after receiving the account. It will be removed almost immediately (without any trace) after i pay the debt off. I immediately called the courthouse where i was charged and confirmed that these charges have nothign to do with my criminal case. The case is still considered settled with no residual charges what so ever. I then called california highway police who said this is a valid charge but i would have to deal with the collection agency.

My concern is not so much the amount (i ahve asked for a itemized bill as to see where they decided on 1293) but rather with what the collection agency said (it will be removed almost immediately if i pay the debt off.) This seems too good to be true. Now the amount itself is something that i can pay, i did try to negotiate the amount but was told that the CA has no authority to negotiate the amount. Fine. But can anyone verify the validity of their being no trace of the debt on my credit report if i pay off the amount?

Welcome to Creditnet Harman, and sorry for the late reply.

I wouldn't believe the CA, as they like to say anything that would convince you to pay quickly. What they might do is just update to show that you have a paid collection, but that doesn't remove the line item from your credit report. Are they wiling to give you something in writing that shows the entire collection will be removed?
