i hate it when everytime i call discover card to activate the cards i received, the rep keeps trying to sell me stuff and promoting things. Dont you hate that. At least with citibank, you dont have to speak to no one when activating cards, you just punch in numbers and you can hang up

800 card activation phone lines are staffed by marketing reps. Calling regular CS to activate your card is usually better. Though with Discover, they might try to sell you something anyway.

There was an article is the Wall St Journal yesterday re this very thing. Since more people are opting out of telemarketing contact cc companies are trying to come up w/ different ways to sell to people. Citibank was noted for enhancing their program for selling when you called cs. Also Wells Fargo and Verizon have enhanced their programs. At Wells Fargo the cs reps are called telephone bankers. Apparently, this strategy has been successful for the companies and some of them now want to make it harder for you to use the automated cs system b/c the live person might be able to make a sale when you call.

What I *really* hate is when I call with a PROBLEM on my phone bill and the rep STILL tries to sell me something. Like I would really buy anything after I had to call to get things corrected!

The WSJ article said exactly that for Verizon. People call about overcharges etc. and the reps try to sell them every product the company offers.

Tip with discover. I have never waited for the reps, I hang up before they pick up and my accounts have always been activated LOL. I think once your account number hits the system, it good to go. I have done with with them on 3 seperate occasions.

Discover is one of the worst; how many times have they asked you if you'd like to know about your super low, today-only, act-now balance transfer rate.

Wow and the phone co., I pay Verizon 20bux a month for a phone so my Tivo can call out once a day. I'm still required to sit through the sales pitch so I may have the privilege to discuss my account. GAH!

I didn't realize this bugged other people, too. I need that WSJ article, I'm going to include a copy with each month's check. . .
