Well the title pretty much lists the question ;-) How hard is a Discover card to get ? Just a plain discover card is all I am asking about at this time. My credit history is a year old, Equifax score 720. I have 2 tradelines reporting - Target which lists as too new to rate, and my Capital One Visa which has been reporting for a year. My chevron cards hasnt began reporting yet. What do you think my chances of getting a discover card would be ? Just looking too add tradelines here ...

Ps - Yes I did a search and it isint working , also I'll be waiting til bumpage gets ahold of the remaining hard inquires on my report :D . Thanks!

I just obtained one with my score. I don't have any lates at all, just alot of inquiries (we were trying to refinance our home awhile back). I didn't get the platinum card but I got the regular discover card with only a 1200.00 limit BUT I didn't want alot cause I only had 1000.00 I wanted to BT over to it for the 0% for 8 months deal. Once I get that paid off in 7 months I'm gonna try for an increase.

Well I decided to call them and explain my situation a little bit with my credit history being short and ask what the chances of approval for me were. That customer service rep. than proceeded to very rudely tell me that she was NOT a credit anylast and that she was only there to take applications. Damn if thats their defintion of service maybe I don't want their card anyways. :X

Well I originally got a discover card as a freshman in college. I am assuming you are like 18-20 so just apply as if you are a college student. They never check.

    Eric,

I;ve applied for Discover three times since getting my credit back together, and I was denied each time for "too many inquiries" and "too many new accounts". I was denied even on reconsideration by a gentleman who agreed with me why the inquiries shouldn't count against me.

Anyway - I have found ALL of their customer service people rude and hostile each time I called. There was no reason for the lady to speak with you that way while she's trying to get your application... unreal!

I will not apply for Discover again. I think that the executives of any company set the tone for how the employees behave, and I have little respect for Discover now.

How many places take Discover anymore other than Sears. Maybe its just cause I live just north of nowhere but it does seems like Sears is the only place that takes Discover.

    Marci,

I had a similar experience with Discover. Last application and request for reconsideration resulted in THREE hards. On the first one, they said they couldn't get my credit info...that there was no report. (EXP)

Then it was too many inquiries....then too many new accounts when all the INQs were gone from Doc's Trick. I've had a belly full of them!

With the scores we had when we've applied and the reports they pulled there was no reason for declining us. As a matter of fact, both of us got approvals from others that were from inquiries that came AFTER the Discover ones.

We've decided we'll have a Discover account when they send us a guaranteed pre-approval for an offer we can't refuse. Till then, we'll let others who really want and appreciate our business make some money.

Discover card is the only card Sam's Club will take. Most restaurants will take it, lots of department stores, and many more. It's a card worth having.

SEARS, JC PENNEYS, MERVYNS, TARGET, K-MART, MOST GROCERY STORES, BEST BUY, CIRCUT CITY, EVERY MAJOR AIRLINE, EVERY MAJOR CAR RENTAL AGENCY, EVERY MAJOR HOTEL, EVERY MAJOR VIDEO STORE, EVERY MAJOR BOOK STORE, SAMS, DIRECTV, VOICESTREAM (T-MOBLE), AND IT GOES ON AND ON~~~but VISA/MC still win the game!!!

When I was using DISCOVERCARD everyday, I still carried a VISA/MC for back up...DISCOVERCARD is accepted MOST PLACES...NOT ALL!!!

BTW~~~ SAMS NOW TAKES WAL*MART STORE CARD...you can also go to WAL*MART and buy a WAL*MART/SAMS gift card with your VISA/MC or AMEX and take the gift card (NOW CALLED SHOPPING CARD) to SAMS and shop to your LIMIT what ever you loaded it with...
    ($5.00-$1,000)

Depends on your location! I've been to states where Sam's Club will take Visa but NOT Mastercard. Bought an item at one and wound up having to return it to a Sam's on the west coast. This one didn't take Mastercard, only Visa!!! They gave me cash ;-)

Just a note--sometimes they will check if you're a student.

I applied for Discover Student card back when, they sent it to my old, old house (moved 3yrs prior). Asked Disco- where they ever dug up that address, they said it's the permanent address your school has for you.

    (which was true)

Had to report the sucker lost/stolen and get a new card reissued to my actual address, *and* it put an incorrect "current address" entry on my reports--what a mess.

Moral of the story: they definitely checked their records with my school, somehow.
