Just called Discover asking if they were having any promotions on balance transfers. The lady I spoke with said they are currently offering 5.9%, but today they're going as low as 1.9%, with no BT fees. I took her up on the offer. It is good until November.

    Dani,

Thanks for the reminder. I can't for the life of me remember where I read this but, it was an article about how various credit card companies were faring. They were all plauged with higher default rates and chargeoffs but, Discover and someone else specifically gripped about "sluggish transaction volume and declining bt activity." This may be a good time to rattle Discover's cage.

I agree. Most of the time I don't even bother contacting Discover because their rates are not competitive with other banks, but I am glad I did. Definitely one of the cheapest BT rates going for existing cardmembers.

In regards to the sluggish transaction fees, I believe it. Not many people carry Discover mainly because they are not accepted everywhere and secondly, their rates (interest and transaction) are usually higher then their competition's.

Discover needs to wake up!Like making the BT rates good until the balances are paid-off!!!Look at citibank, and at&t unversal!Well hell i am enjoying a 4.9% on my citibank account, and a 5.9% on my at&t universal card both good until the balances are paid-off!these rates will remain just as long as i follow their credit card terms of agreement.I am suprized that discover hasn't caught on to other banks like these 2 when it comes to transferring existing balances too them for their very low rates.Just maybe when discover does an AR they will get the message on my account balances with these 2 banks going down fast with these low rates then in return say alright you win by offering a match on one of these 2 or a little lower rates good until the balance is paid in full!Only time will tell when this may happen.

    Mom,

The balance transfer dept. isn't going to offer you anything lower than 5.9% (their new promotion) they will say nothing else is available. Ask them to transfer you to their interest rate department (I didn't even know that co. actually had interest rate dept.). I think their "interest rate" dept. is like everyone else's retention. Ask them what is the lowest they can offer you. I got 1.9%, others received 0% (no BT fees). Just don't deal with customer service - they have no clue that Discover is even offering 1.9%.

Is that the name they actually used? (Of course, they may have made that name up, like if you press most reps, they'd tell you you can talk with an "account specialist", rather than a "retention agent" :))

I called about a week ago to Discover to get the new blue card (just arrived yesterday--very cool). I noted that the Blue card carries 0% intro rates for new customers. I'm a new customer to that particular color of Discover card. CSR transferred me to BT dept.

With the same logic, the BT guy offered 1.9% for 6mos, I said, "everybody has 1.9%." No hassle, he gave me 0% for six months. I didn't fret at that, 6months of free money is hard to turn down. Asked if I could get it for purchases too, I had to call back next day (that dept. was closed...(?)), they gave the same deal, 0% for six months on BT and purchases.

My reports are going to look lousy while I carry a fat balance on Discover for the next six months, but what a deal!

    Dani,

I got 1.9% BT no fees for one of my Discover Platinum Card and the rest of them was either 3.9% or 5.9% BT for six months.
