dorky question; opinions sought

I think I'm feeling a little defeatist. :) Though it has nothing to do with credit. But I want some opinions if at all possible.

There are three big black marks DH and my records.

One is mine: 90+ days late on a student loan, since paid. It would be nice to remove this, but my credit is pretty decent as is.

Two are his: many, many lates on the car and mortgage for the house house he "gave" to his ex on and after their divorce. His credit is not great.

BTW, the car is now paid for and that house is sold, thank god.

My student loan lapse is "bad" but not very recent. His car and mortgage late pays are very bad and very recent (ex only sold the house last year).

Given that student loan agencies are usually hard to work with, and the car and house are paid but pretty recent on the bad negs, do you think it's worth trying to get any of these off during the holidays?

After all, sending certified letters for each incident to each of the CAs involves actual cash.

Or do you think these kind of negatives are too fresh and I should wait until they age more?

I would really love any opinions on the viability of contesting these, even "you are a procrastinating slothlike dork." The holidays are so full and I hope to avoid most purely or mostly futile activities.

    Thanks for reading.

Thank you, javan. I will take this as the kick in the butt I so desperately need.

Much appreciated ... really & truly.

Not a dorky question at all. Very easy to feel down and out about this. The worst is the 90-day late, and even though it is paid, it will hurt. 90-day late is bad, but once its gone you'll be inundated with pre-approved offers with everything at great super-prime rates 11% or lower.

Thanks again to everyone. I really appreciate the support -- A LOT.

I actually sent off everything for a first-round tilt at the windmills. A few days ago I entered a dispute at the CRAs, and today sent off two pretty exhaustive goodwill requests. I would've never gotten that far with y'all. :)

    THANKS!

Uh, what I was trying to say was "would never have made it this far WITHOUT y'all."

Obviously all that effort took up my brainiac quotient for the day.
