    Help with a collector

I received a collection notice from a lawyer/debt collector this week informing me I had a debt of roughly 4K. The letter was crafted so that if I 'pay $25 per month they will put a hold on my account until final payment from my tax refund' ...uhhh nice try :)

There was little or no detail in the letter

Now some background: I have no real clue where this debt comes from (the lawyers 'client' is a dummy financial company who bought the debt?) I have pretty good reason to believe that this may be a debt I incurred with a credit card roughly 10 - 15 years ago with my ex-girl friend. I live in Massachusetts.

    I have not contacted them.

Please advise on what my next step/s should be. I have read so many conflicting things.

    Thank you for the advice!

Send a DV letter to the CA first. If this really is an old debt that's out of SOL, then you can follow up with a letter telling them so. Hopefully they'll back off after that.
