I have a paid collection from the power company from 1999. I moved and for some reason it took a while for my last bill to catch up with me. Anyway....
I want to get it off my report. It is for $71.

Would you dispute as not mine, or how would you dispute it???

First I'd explain what happened to the utility company and ask if they will remove it. If that didn't work, I'd try disputing it. If that still didn't work, then I'd send validation letters, the nutcase letters, and every other letter I could think of to make myself a pain in the butt.

lovellsh, I would have the previous address deleted from the CR's that the utility charge is on and wait a couple of weeks until you get it deleted. Then send them a copy of your report that shows addresses and say I never lived at that address, please delete not mine. charlie

Here's another utility question for ya...

I was living in this house with my cousin and my aunt, who I was named for. Aunt moved out, and electric bill went into cousin's name.

Cousin moved out, and I called to get the service transferred to my name. Had to supply my SSN so they could ensure I didn't have any past due balances with them. There were no problems...

Upon receiving my credit reports, there is a collection account for the electric company for over $1100. my only guess is somehow my aunt's account got scooted on to my report.

If I dispute this as not mine, does anyone care to guess how successful I will be?? You can get electric service on the telephone, so there are no contracts, etc...I would love any advice on this one! Thanks!

lovellsh, i'd be curious to hear what you decided to do and if you end up having any success. I'm in a similar situation trying to get rid of a utility collection account from 3 years ago. Thanks.

I would like to hear any updates on this. I have an old utility collection for 94 bucks that I want to get rid of. has anyone had any victories?

I followed the advice of the posters and first I disputed with Experian to get the old address off (the other CRA didn't list the address). Then I disputed as not mine to all 3 bureaus. I just got my last report today and it was from Transunion.

The Utah Power collection account is now off all my reports! yeah!

thanks I am going to give it a try, EX is the only one that has my address that far back. But EX does not have the Utility collection on it.

I will double check the addresses and go from there.
