how long can a dispute last?

I disputed an item on my credit report years ago from Citibank Visa. The charge off was dropped from TU and Equifax. I recently got an Experian report and it is still there, but the description is "Account in Dispute" and the last status date is March 1998. How long can something remain in dispute before some sort of conclusion is reached? Is this right?

I have a validation letter all printed out, but is that the right step to take.

Background: The account went to collections many moons ago. I paid the CA off once I graduated from college.

Someone will be along to help you shortly but while you wait why don't you put in a call to Experian and ask them what's going on with that item? It wouldn't hurt to ask.

i'm afraid that if i contact them as opposed to the OC, they will "verify" and my score (681) will plummet!

I had almost this same situation with Citi. I disputed and they verified and the status changed to "Paid Collection". My score, however, did not change. (I am guessing that although it was marked as disputed, it was still being factored into my score somehow.)

I now wish I had approached it differently (although I'm not sure how), because now it is being reported 100% accurately and I'm guessing it's going to be a little harder to get it off.

so you see my dilemma. i was going to send a validation letter to citi but i'm not sure if i should do that or complain to the CRA about that they are outside of their time limit to resolve it?
