I quote insurance from Progressive insurance today and they didn't tell me they're going to look up my credit history. Later, I logged on the CreditExpert.com and found out that they made a hard inquiry on me. In their websites, they didn't mention to pull a hard inquiry for a insurance quote. Of course, I disputed the inquiry. Ron.
I HOPE YOU WRITE THEM OR CALL THEM AND TELL THEM !*&#*&%$)(&% And you tell everybody you know that they pulled a "HARD" to see how you drive!!!
Pulling a credit report for insurance is pretty common nowadays. But it sure would be nice if they'd tell you what they're doing before they do it. A few years ago I was insurance shopping - Progresive, Geico, etc... they all pull your report in order to give you a quote. Up until recently we had Allstate. They'd pull our report each time they renewed the policy - 2x a year, hard inquiry. Apparently they feel there is some correlation between good credit and good driving skills. Ozzy.
THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE WITH "ROTTEN" CREDIT WITH NO TICKETS OR ACCIDENTS TO DIS-PROVE THAT THEORY!!!
I have crappy credit and perfect driving history. So I DISPROVE the theory. ***EDIT*** I have never had a claim....EVER! AND I pay in full up front. So no credit is extended. ***EDIT***
IF YOU GET A "HARD" ...OR "SOFT" FOR THAT MATTER...DISPUTE IT!!! YOU APPLIED FOR NO CREDIT CARD OR LOAN FROM THAT COMPANY!!!
I've noticed that they pulled inquires too when I was looking for good rates on auto insurance. I called Geico, Sears insurance, but then ended up sticking with Progressive b/c they have great rates and I didn't want to switch. I noticed that all of the companies had inquiries on my report. I didn't like that at all. A good thing that can come out of it is that you can usually get a free copy of the credit report they pulled if you don't have any other type of monitoring service. Still, I guess I would rather have no inquiries and then pay for a report when I want to check my stats.
Alan, I used to go with progressive until I noticed that they were raping me for my insurance. Over $800/year for state minimum liability coverage and then I went to State Farm and they wanted less than half of that for more than state minimum liability coverage. BTW...I owned the car outright. No leins, no nothing. AND I have a clean driving record with no claims!!! I guess my point is, you may think you are getting cheap coverage, but until you look around...you never know.
Erica, They quote me something $755 for 6 months and now I'm paying $625 for 6 months from AllState. Ron.
Right Erica but it should not cost you points to find out. This is why Inquires shouldn't be reportable.
FWIW, I have had my auto and renter's insurance through Erie since 1997, and they have never placed a single inquiry on any of my reports--not even a soft. I think they're just local (MD/VA/PA, etc.), but if you're shopping for an insurance provider that isn't going to ding your reports, I'd check them out. The rates are good, as well; I'm 24, female, have a 5 year old car, clean driving record, and pay $740/year. Can't wait to see what it goes down to when I turn 25 this summer! And no, I'm not an agent.
