I purchased an item over the phone back in August and paid it in full using my credit card. I was then contacted by the store that their system accidentally refunded my money back to my credit card and that they would like me to pay it in full. I was told that if I did not pay it, they would send it to a collection agency. I am in the process of checking if this is legit, but in the meantime can they send me to collections? I paid for the item in full at time of purchase, I don't see how this is my fault. Thank you.

This falls into the grey area.

I would send something to the executive offices of the company, asking for goodwill for their mistakes.

Emphasize that threatening to send a customer to a collection agency for a mistake that they have admitted that they made is a pubic relations nightmare. And you would be more than happy to send their letter, and yours, to every local consumer news reporter.

The grey area. You received a product, that you were willing to pay for.

If it's legit, it's the right thing to do.
