What was your largest singe credit card purchase and did they let it go through without trying to contact you? What type of card did you use for this purchase?

My largest purchase so far was with an mbna mc for around 2,300 for an airline ticket and tour. They mailed me my tickets/hotel vouchers so they didn't call me.

For me (post bk-13) it was $1500.00 for a TV at Best Buy.

Card used was Target Visa. No hassles at all.

My brother-in-law bought a watch for his wife, if memory serves me right it was a $5600.00 transaction on his Plat. Discover card. A no hassle transaction.

    Best regards,
    Mirage

Just over $3000 for a new A/C unit. I called before the purchase to let them know because I had never made large purchases before on the card.

    Dogman,
When and where did you go "down under"? Sydney is my absolute favorite city in the world (and I've been to quite a few :) -- So nice, I did it twice -- I also made a trip to Melbourne and then went over to Aukland

Great places and great people...the company I was working for at the time had a 35th floor view overlooking the Opera House, harbour and the Botanical Gardens -- I couldn't work there full time, I'd never stop looking out the window :)

To keep the original thread in focus..my most expensive card purchase (Corporate Amex -- does that count?) was a Washington to Tokyo (thru Chicago) to Sydney to LA and back to Washington DC. cost was $17,000+ for a 3 week trip...my calling card bill was another $4,000 as well.

Thanks for letting me go back over some GREAT Memories!

    I miss the Rocks!!

    As always...

I remember paying a tuition bill a couple of years ago for $4500. Too bad it wasn't on a rewards card. Chase approved the transaction with no problems.

It's a tie between AMEX and MBNA for $5k. No problems.

The most I charged at one time was a little over $4,000 at a local Ford dealer. My mom was purchasing a car and I wanted the points for her down payment. :)
The card I used was Amex Blue. No problems with the transaction. The funny thing is, they didn't even have the card in their posession and I wasn't there to make the transaction. I gave my mom my card info and they processed it manually.
I don't know if that was convenient or scary!! :-D

Almost $14,000 on my Amex Plat, and yes they made them call in and they talked to me to verify that it was me. I also told them it was a company expense that would be reimbursed immediatley

I was sweating a little but it went through.

At what dollar amount for a charge do the companies usually start getting nervous.

I think it all depends on the cardholders history in relation to how much he/she usually charges in a month, or in a transaction.

If someone ususally only uses their card for large purchases, $1000 + then when an attempt for a charge for $2000, or even $4000 comes through, it wouldn't be considered "suspicious".

But if a consumer were only charging usually $25-$150 per transaction, and a charge for $2000 suddenly comes up, the company *may* require you to call them, or for the merchant to call, just to verify that it's you.

when I worked for Chemical Bank in NY I used to attend the M.I.T. summer session for techies every summer. One year we studied an AI (artificial intelligence) system developed by American Express. It was basically a system that developed "patterns" for each cardholder. When the cardholder spent "out of pattern" a flag went up and it immediately sent a msg to the merchant to "call it in".

Years later I learned AMEX had developed this software for public consumption...meaning other credit providers. I learned via my banking contacts (mostly other techies) that the AMEX system was great for them but was more difiicult for MC/VISA providers because these providers had difficulty developing customer patterns as people used these cards for everything from groceries to post office supplies.

    just a little trivia knowledge ;=}

I'm sure it depends, particularly for amex, on your spending patterns. But i've noticed that amex let charges under 1,000 get approved without calling in, but a larger purchase I made for a computer around 1,600 required them to talk to me. They approved it, they wanted to make sure it was me. This was about 4 years ago, it may have changed my now, particularly as my spending on the card has increased.

Hi Hurricane - went to Sydney - stayed at the Regent 2 blx from the rocks as you know. Fantastic - people there are really happy!

went to Melbourne - fantastic as well - and of course Hayman Islands at Great Barrier Reef.

10 days is all I spent - not enough due to jet lag.
3 weeks would be great - everything is HALF our cost!

    Dogman,
Small world...I stayed at the Regent during my first trip -- loved it!! ...my second trip they were closed for remodeling in prep for the Olympics..so I stayed at the Hotel Nikko over on Darling Harbor..Great view of the harbor with the monorail and the old Australian submarine..

A few of my co-workers and I took the tour of the sub -- where you wear the headphones and listen to a guide...the guide was clueless..so my friends started asking me all the questions (since they knew I was an ex-submariner)...by the end of the tour we had about 10 people following us -- and they had all taken their headphones off to listen to me :) The guide asked me if I wanted a job...

$22,400 Purchase from Sony Direct. (Vaios) for a new company. Went on an Amex green. They also called and verified (and it was also to be company reimbursed) so it went through. Nice MRs on that one ;) Normal pattern is 3-5k a month, company reimbursed spending.

Smallest charge: $0.26. Pack of gum on Providian (to keep it active). I did that also with Nextcard for a while ;)
