Macy's card limit increase

Macy's card is often criticized for very low initial credit lines. True, they start as low as $100 for some of us (myself included).

However, since my card was issued (on late December, received early January) my credit limit was raised 4 times within the first 6-7 months, for a total of $1,000. Last time I spoke w/ the credit department, the supervisor was so upset w/ my frequent increases, he said he's put a note on my account saying I'm not eligible for any more increases till the end of September!

I've decided to test just how effective those notes really are, LOL

I called the credit department today, asked for an increase and was told to hold. I was prepared to speak w/ the rep once he's read the note and see whether I'd get away w/ another increase. Alas, no silver tongue was necessary :)

"Sir, I've just increased your limit from $1,000 to $1,500". It seemed too easy, so I called the automated system, which verified the new limit.

    To sum it up:

    1. Macy's is the among easiest retail cards to qualify for, and a retail card is important to one's credit mix.

    2. Initial limits are indeed laughable, but show them a little inhouse payment history and it could increase 15 fold or more within a few months. They'd always tell you to wait at least 3 months between increases -- disregard it.

    3. If you've charged on their regular card $500 (or more) in any 12-month period, ask for an upgrade to the Macy's Premier card.

    4. Has nothing to do w/ credit, but still a useful advice: If you'd like to know how to shop at their website at approx 28% discount (including already discounted items), e-mail me. I'm not charging for this information (although I should! LOL)

    Good luck!

Same here, when I first got my macy card I had a limit of 100 bucks. But I got it raised to $2000 over a period of 3 years.

    Saar,

Does the same apply if one was started with a 2000.00 limit?

Sorry guys, ignore #4, the coupon code expired 2 days ago. I'll let you know if I come across another one.

AZMDX: Haven't reached that figure yet, but I don't see why not.

Saar: I really don't know why you insist with the Macy's card. If I were you I I had canceled this account long time ago!!. Apply for Saks (Probably also Nordstrom) they give you an initial credit line of 2,500.

I did not "insist" on anything; At the time they approved me I didn't even qualify for a damn Target! And why would I cancel an account w/ a company that's been so good to me?

Then there's another reason: This is where I shop!

    :)

I agree, macy's is a great starter card. They gave me a card when I first started out building my credit. And I also like to shop at macy's.

Yes it appears Macy's is a great building or rebuilding retail card to obtain.

Wow Saks card, I can only picture myself shopping there if I find myself a Sugar Daddy LOL:)

I agree that Macy's is a good way to get that first retail card. Shortly before JCPenney turned me down, I got an instore instant approval by Macy's. That was two months after Target had so rudely turned me down.

I was amazed at how easy my first credit limit increase was. Using the courtesy phone at the store, I simply asked for a limit increase and went from $200 to $400 just like that. I think it was about 5 months after I got my card, certainly less than 6 months.
