I think this a very informative board. I recently applied on-line for Macy's charge card and was approved for a 2000.00 limit. What limits do anyone else have?

Just so you know, Macy's does a soft inquiry on me twice a year. I use the card quite a lot but they never raise my limit. I don't want a raise in limits but I think they are checking up on me because of the chargeoffs from 1997. I was lucky they didn't discontinue me as a customer.

    Congrats

If this is a non-Visa card, and Macy's gave you a $2,000 limit, you must be a millionnaire. Anything less would get you a $100-$500 limit.

    Saar,

I think your posts are full detail and informative. How do know so many facts? Maybe I've got my posters mixed-up but aren't you the person who moved to this country with no credit? You have learned a lot in a short while!

My friend makes roughly $55k/yr and her Macy's limit is $3k. She also works there part-time.

Thanks for the info. It is not uncommon for employers to grant special credit privileges for indoor employees. My "millionnaire" statement was merely anecdotal.

I'm not a millionaire, but Macy's started me at $1200 in '97, now it's at $5k and I have another $5k on the Pres. Club Visa.

They never asked income for the raises ... in fact, when I talked to the credit analyst when I opened the account (it needed to be looked at by a human due to a BK) told me they try to set the limit similar to other store card limits you have.

Thank you for sharing that experience.

That would give us another reason to have some retail credit cards: if you already have some, you look more legitimate to get the one you really want.

The reference was for initial limit on non-Visa Macy's cards. No doubt, back in '97 lenders were more lenient in approving credit lines. Economic growth then seemed much more promising than nowadays. By today's approval standards, a $1,200 initial limit Macy's card wouldn't be anywhere near the meadian limit (unless it's a Visa).
