I contacted Nordstrom to inquire about a minor billing matter. Their customer service is superb. The rep took care of the matter to my satisfaction immediately.

As we were concluding our discussion, I asked if my credit limit could be increased from $2K to $3K without a credit inquiry. The rep responded by saying " I have just increased your limit to $3K without an inquiry, per your request, and thank you for shopping at Nordstrom".

This account is 18 months old and I had been given my Chapter 7 BK discharge two (2) years prior to opening the account. I have said it before and I will say it again that Nordstrom is one of the most BK friendly stores to do business with as long as...

2 years have passed since discharge
There are no further credit problems
    You have established new credit
Most importantly - don't apply online - Contact them by telephone and explain your credit situation. Ask what their current policy is. If the policy sounds favorable, do the application over the telphone. This is what I did.

Eighteen (18) months ago when I opened the Nordstrom account, I had been on this board only a few months and my credit was making a major recovery. I was fortunate that Nordstrom was willing to take a chance on me. Retail stores just like the credit card companies are unique in the manner that they handle potential customers with a BK.

Keeping a sense of humor here...

I was declined at Mobil, Chevron and Walmart among others at the same time that Nordstrom gave me an account.

    Best regards,

    Jim

I find Nordstrom's customer service to be excellant. I have had them off on for almost 15 years. Credit increases are done annually (October for me), so even if you don't ask, you may be in for a surprise on one of your statements. I find there customer service reps to be honest and can answer most questions for you without having to transfer to another group. Be sure in the future to ask for a APR decrease. Mine is currently 9.9 (It actually went up one point recently for some reason). Although I just got the VISA card, the APR is the same for that card also.

Nordstrom in general is known for their superb customer service and there has even been a book written about it. I've had the card since '95 but they've never increased my CL. I admit I haven't used them very much because I really prefer Neimans and Saks more. I never quite know how to classify Nordstrom--they are neither truly upscale nor really middle-of-the-road like Macys.

Whoa now Luxury, what your tougue with Macy's (lol) I have horrible credit, check my scores. When I started this journey on 7/1/2002 my Macy's was a late by 2 years. I called them, told them I had moved and was not getting the statement. The Rep looked over my account, saw all the late charges and said why not pay your original balance of 95.18 and I will delete all the negative. What more could I ask for. It is the only store card I have adn it has a whopping 100.00 (Yes I said one hundred dollars) limit, but it is also stating that I have had the account since 1997 and pays/never late. Gotta love that Macy's. By the way I love Neiman, one of the major reasons why I want an Amex. So I can stop paying cash there.

I'm glad Macys credit has tried to help you through your difficulties. I haven't had any problems with them. In fact I had a Bambergers account which got converted to a Macys acct. There stuff is fine, they just are not in the same type of specialty store category like N-M, Bergdorfs, or Saks. For everyday things Macys is fine, there stuff just isn;t very special, even the Herald Square store.

    Hi KK and luxury4me !!!

KK - You brought up a good point. I never carry a balance at Nordstrom from month to month. I always pay it off when the bill arrives. Therefore, I did not concern myself with the apr.

I should concern myself because, there is a Nordstrom visa card available and it seems logical that the better the terms one has on the store card will make negotiation of terms on the visa card just that much easier. I should mention that at some point in the past, Nordstrom informed me that a hard inquiry is required for the visa card. The visa card carries a 15.9% apr. but I suspect it is negotiable.

The apr.'s on my five (5) current visa / mc are all fixed prime rates. The range is from 8.9% to 11.65%. Therefore, I do not want or need another visa / mc. However, again your point was well made.

luxury4me - You are right about Nordstrom occupying a niche between Macy's and (Neiman or Saks). My daughter is the primary shopper in our family of two people ( me and her). I don't want her shopping at Neiman or Saks because at age 16 - she needs to understand that not everyone has the income or assets to shop at these 2 stores. In other words, they are inappropriate for her. However, she can and does shop at Nordstrom, Macy's and Robinsons-May.

For you, I just say more power to you and shop to your hearts content at Neiman and Saks. If you are building or rebuilding credit, I would imagine that they have their own store cards for you. Your point was well made too.

kbangar - Congrats on Macy's. You are the second person on the board that I recall got their card back after credit difficulties with the Macy company.

    Best regards,

    Jim
