Does anyone know if Nordstrom is genereous with their initial credit limits.

I'm considering making a very large purchase from their store, but only if they will extend enough credit via in store instant credit to cover the purchase.

    Please share experience.
    Thank you

You should give them a call first and ask them their criteria for credit lines. Talk to some in customer service or in the credit department. I opened my account initially 14 years ago and the first credit line was $400.00. I closed it four years later and reopened it in 1997. the second time I applied, I did it at one of the instore registers and the initial credit line again was very low (around $600.00). Nordstroms is very generous with their credit increases though. In the first 18 months my CL went from around $600.00 to over $6000.00. The credit increases are done in October and initiated by them. I never asked for an increase. I think if you talk to them first, you will definitely get the limit that you need for your purchase.

    The customer service number is 1 888 242 1008.

I just called Nordstrom. For the retail card, anything below 600 FICO will probably disqualify you. A judgment or public record will also all but disqualify you, especially if you are borderline.

    Thanks KK.

I took your advice & called their credit department. To my dismay, the rep said that they will pull Experian and she has only seen initial credit lines as high a $ 4000.00 for their retail card and $ 8000.00 for their Visa card.

This is very disappointing to me because Experian is my worst report. I have 1 negative on Experian and Trans Union & Equifax are perfectly clean.

I may have to wait on my purchase. But having this information prior to wasting a inquiry and being told "Declined" in front of a register with 20 people standing behind you heips to make an informed decision.

    Thanks again for your help.

KK - Did you use your nordstrom VISA often or do you think they gave you increases based on what you had on your credit report automatically?

The rep told me they will always pull Experian first, and if another report is needed the will then look at TU or Eq.

    Ender,

I have the retail card, not the VISA. I count myself among the many Nordstrom fools out there and I use my card way too much. I actually opened the card in '98 and the first CL increase in 10/98 was for $2000.00 and the second CL increase in 10/99 was for $4000.00. I noticed they did an AR this past October 2001 but I did NOT get an increase in 10/99 , so store usage is not the only factor. There is something on my credit report that they currently don't like.

I received this card in Dec 2001. They pulled Experian. (My score was around 740) My initial credit limit for the VISA was 8000.
