I have a question. (imagine that)

I just found out today that my fiance also owes a bank around $280 for an old account, closed years ago, apparently went overdraft, account closed, never paid, etc. Don't know how many years ago this was. It's not on any credit reports.

We have been shopping around for a new bank. . A bank he called this morning said we could not open an account (checking) with them because he owed another bank money.

Where are they getting this info? It's not on any credit reports. Do Banks have some sort of listing of things like this?

It's from ChexSystems ... all banks use it nowadays. it's a credit bureau, and should obey the FCRA. Since you have been declined due to an adverse report from them, they owe you a free report.

If it's past the 7 year mark, dispute the entry as obsolete and have it removed.

    Best of luck.

How very interesting. Never heard of it before.

Thank you guys so much for answering.

Guess I'll look into it. Fiance is telling me it's probably about 3 years ago. Oh, he's telling me the bank was First Union and I guess they merged with Wachovia. It was Wachovia he called this morning and he also called Palmetto Bank. They both declined because of this money they say he owed to First Union.

Oh, they started charging him NSF fees he didn't believe he owed and they refused to take them off, and they closed the account.

    THANKS again guys!

Well, I ordered the report. Says it will be mailed in 5 days. *sigh*

Sometime I hate the South. When I live in the Midwest, nobody checked credit before opening a dang checking account.

If you had the money in your hand to deposit, you got an account. Glad I still have my old account there (nothing much in it, but still have it)
