    Hiya!

Wanted to check to see if anyone has had any dealing with PHEAA over student loans?

I defaulted on my loans a while back, completed a default recovery program, and haven't missed a payment since (3 years or so).

This took my loans out of default and the new loan info shows up on my credit report as current/never late. However, all of those same loans that where defaulted also show up as collection/charge-off & defaults (depending on which CRA you look at). Some also note "special handling - contact subscriber for additional information". I'm not sure if this references to the rehabilitation program I completed or not. Either way, the bad marks are there.

I have about 5 of these loans that I make one monthly payment on. I have a current outstanding total balance of about $4,500 left to pay.

Also, the "derogs" on these accounts are slated to drop off of my report on 3/2005.

Anyone have any advice on how I can work these derogs?

    Thanx!

I've been digging around some more and found this little gem listed on the AES Success website (a subdivision of PHEAA).

From what I can tell, I should be able to just call them and tell them I completed the rehab program (which I did) and have the derogs removed. It does say "deleted from your credit report" and not "modified" and such. Mine appears to have been give treatment of the later.

Here is the link, might prove useful for anyone else in my situation. PHEAA/AESsuccess Default Rehabilitation. . Unless of course I'm missing something here...It's possible...I'm still a newb. :)

Anyone have any advice on weather I should contact PHEAA by phone or send a Goodwill type letter asking that they kindly remove the derogs that the Default Rehabilitation program promises?

    Anyone?

    Thanx!

I think that I'd try the call route first. It's the easiest and most simple, but I might try and talk to a supervisor. You know what they say, sometimes the simplest route is the easiest. Hopefully it's the case here.

If that doesn't work, then maybe try PFB or a general goodwill letter...

I gave a call to PHEAA/AES and talked to a very nice representative that requested that I send copies of my reports that showed the derogs and a letter explaining that I was promised removal upon completion of the Rehabilitation Program. However, I'm not sure if sending them copies of the derogs is such a good idea. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm designing my letter with a Goodwill type theme and will send a copy of their website page that promises to "delete" the defaulted items. I'm just wondering if this letter and the proof of their delete statements will be enough. I'm leery about sending anyone my reports directly. I'm sure they can pull them if they need to.

    Anyone?

    Thanx!

Hi, BlakMajix, consider engaging the Dept. of Education's Ombudsman if they don't follow through.

I just saw your other thread directed to me -- sorry I missed that when you posted it. In my case, I sent PHEAA a "Nutcase" letter (see FAQ thread at top of board). They buckled quickly and actually sent me an apology for reporting the tradelines late in the first place. I get the idea that the PHEAA folks would rather spend their time counting the earned interest on student loan repayments than fight people about credit reports. Definitely keep us posted. :)

    Hiya Doc!

Thanks for the input. I'll keep you updated on how things go. I figured I'd take the "Goodwill/buttkiss lets solve this problem together" approach. I sent them a letter today that explains the situation and also contains a copy of their website that promises to remove the default derogatories as proof of their original promise.

If that doesn't work, I'll start working on the "Nutcase" job ;)

    Thanx!

Also, I'll be sure to look into the Dept. of Education's Ombudsman.

    Thanks for the info Doc!!!
