I received a letter this week from Providian about my card that they were upgraded my account.

They are running a promotional 9.99% until my May statement and then reducing my interest rate (18.99%) which is lower than before.(23.99%) They have also added a 25-day grace period which I didn't have before. I have a Provdian Gold card and I have had it a year and half. My CL is $2100 which I never paid for any increases.

I mentioned this because I read about some people complaining about never getting their APR lowered. But I have always paid this card in full sometimes more than what the statement states. I pay what I used for that month and pay that. I send it early by priority mail with receipt. I don't trust them. But doing it this way works.

I was going to ask you all if I should get another credit card before I closed on my Mortgage. I knew I probably could get a better rates. However, I plan to refinance my home and didn't want anything to interfere with getting the lowest rates possible.

So I closed on my home this past Friday. (Yeah!) My plan is to pay it off in 5 years. It all because of the helpful information on this board that I was able to clean up my credit reports to get this home. Thank you all!

And now Providian has given me a 25 day grace period is which I wanted and lowered my interest rates..I can live with that for now. It isn't the greatest but like I said I don't want to mess up trying to get the best rates in refinancing. I still have the collection account to be removed off my record on Equifax. I still trying to figure out the best way to ask in writing my doctors office to remove it. It will drop off next year.

Thank you all again and to Credit Talk for this great board.

Bunni :) (I got my home!!)

Re: Providian Upgraded Card w/o Asking

I got the same letter two weeks ago. But I had a grace period with me card so that was no biggie.

It seems lately that Providian has given me quite a few offers of 9.99% for three months.

As for your question, no I would wait until after closing to even think about obtaining any new cc.

You don't need the inq. on your reports. If Providian is doing you okay at the moment then good for you.

    Best regards,
    Mirage

for those getting these promo offers...

have you been using your card or not?
What would you do if you were certain you would always succeed...

Re: Providian Upgraded Card w/o Asking

Providian mentions that the 9.99% starts with my Feb. cycle and that for me is the middle of the month.

I received the letter two weeks ago and have yet to see the 'Platinum' card.

The 9.99% rate will not alter my game plan regarding Providian. My game plan is to payoff my balance with Nextcard and Providian. At this point I think Nextcard is much more unstable so my resources will be targeted there first.

    Best regards,
    Mirage

    Mirage,

I got 9.9% fixed APR and the credit limit $11,800 with NextCard for over two yrs. I have been asking them to upgrade my account from regular to Platinum. They told me the system won't let them to do it. Oh well, it just a card.

Re: Providian Upgraded Card w/o Asking

My Providian Gold Visa was opened in 06/2000. (unsecured with open line of 2k)

Currently my credit line is 6.8k

So it looks like one of the factors is that you have to have the Gold Visa for at least 18 months.

    Anybody else received this offer?

    Best regards,
    Mirage

Re: Providian Upgraded Card w/o Asking

Congrats on the APR decreases, upgrades & promo rates. It just floors me that I could not get much from Providian. I had my account 5.5 years and never received a grace period or any promo offers. I went through customer service, supervisors and the Executive office. No dice. I was always on time with payments, never overlimit and used the card heavily.

I wrote scathing, but appropriate letters through Planetfeedback and to the Executive offices about my disappointment regarding better account terms and upgrades. They need to know that customers who start off as subprime will not always remain there. They will once again have excellent credit. Hopefully my letters (and many others customers letters) & Creditnet posts (which I'm sure they read) has opened their eyes that they need to do something to keep their dedicated customers.

I really did like Providian. I wish I didn't have to close my account, but after having an account that long, I knew I would never receive the "invitation" for a Platinum card.

I hope you all keep receiving these great offers. You deserve them!! :-)
