    i just called equifax to ask them to remove an old address. they informed me to put it in writing and mail it to them. now i did live there, but i'm trying to get a judgement deleted off my report from this address. so how should i go about this? should i send them a letter stating the address is inaccurate and say nothing else or should i tell them the address is inaccurate and give them "the correct" address (my parents address)

    Just two seconds ago, I pulled a new equifax report to dispute a couple of items. They gave me the choice of disputing a previous address - you might try it that way if you want to do it fast.

    But, if they are using the address you wish to delete as your "current address" - then in the past they have required me to send them a copy of my driver's license and/or a utility bill showing them what my legal "current address" really is.

    If you apply for credit anywhere that pulls Exuifax, the address you submit will be the one that gets used as current.

    Once that address is listed with Equifax, it takes sending all manner of verification to get it changed, even if it's an obvious typo.

    However, if it's an old address, you can just call and dispute it over the phone. At least I was able to do so with CSC.

    the address i want removed is a previous address. the one listed as current is accurate. i tried over the phone with CBC and they told me they don't do it over the phone they need me to write to them. i called experian and tu and they deleted with no problem.

    Wanda,

    There is no requirement for a written document when disputing any item of information with the CRA.

    § 611. Procedure in case of disputed accuracy [15 U.S.C. § 1681i]

    (a) Reinvestigations of disputed information.

    (1) Reinvestigation required.

    (A) In general. If the completeness or accuracy of any item of information contained in a consumer's file at a consumer reporting agency is disputed by the consumer and the consumer notifies the agency directly of such dispute, the agency shall reinvestigate free of charge and record the current status of the disputed information, or delete the item from the file in accordance with paragraph (5), before the end of the 30-day period beginning on the date on which the agency receives the notice of the dispute from the consumer.

    That said: Here's an FTC Staff Opinion addressing this issue;

    http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcra/cohan2.htm

    Endnote:

    2. Section 611(a)(1)(A) requires no written statements of any kind by the consumer, stating that the CRA's reinvestigation duties are triggered when the consumer "notifies the agency directly" of the dispute.

    There is also substantial case law.

    All that aside, You'd probably find it a LOT easier to just send them a note stating the address is not yours. Sometimes sugar catches more flies.

    Have you tried calling as many times as it takes to get a different CSR?
