I have an old Kay Jewelers account that I closed a while back. I called today to see if they would reopen the account. They said no, I would have to apply for a new account.

Anyone else have luck with Kay Jewelers with this kinda thing?

I'm gonna try Penneys next, but my Kays account was opened earlier and had a higher limit.

No go for the Penneys account either.

Home Depot won't do it for me either. I asked them to just remove it since it doesn't say closed, inactive, or anything. It's like it's just there with a zero balance and no activity and I can't do anything about it. geez...It is a positive one I had, but what good is it now? And how long will it stay?? Heck if I know!

How long have they been closed? If it is less than 3-6 months there usually is no problem.

    It should be reported...

    Account closed by consumer
    Paid/never late
    Balance $0

If you want to re-open old accounts, it usually has to be done in 90 days after closing it.

A friend who worked for Sears said they usually soft close an account for one year so that one could ask it to be reopened with minimum hassle, just update address and phone number. After one year, it's a hard close and requires credit reports etc.

I have reopened my Target Guest Card and Mervyns card that had been closed almost two years with no problem and no new credit check.

reopen old accounts means they made another inquiry in your credit reports whether they reopen your account or not.

There were no inquiries, the account have been closed for quite a while, too long.

I just wanted to increase my average age of accounts by re-opening these accounts that I had originally opened a long time ago.

Out of the blue the other day I noticed that a Foleys account I paid off years ago, and thought was long since closed, was actually still listed as open on my credit report. Called Foleys, they said, "Yep, account's inactive but still open. Can have a card out to you next week, if you want."

They told me that reopening inactive accounts didn't require a new credit check, but that the balance was automically reset to $100 from whatever it had been. If I want a higher limit again I gotta use it a couple months then call in, or reapply from scratch.

My Home Depot is showing as inactive with a zero balance. They said it had been too long and if I wanted their credit I could surely reapply! That's why I sent a letter requesting it closed by consumer and I've yet to see anything done about it. Hmmmm PF time I think.

Watch the Foley's card. They closed mine shortly after I re-opened it from inactive, for "not enough use." Go figure.

If you DON'T use a store card once or twice a year...they will CLOSE IT FOR YOU!!!
