I have just begun the process of repairing my credit...I checked my credit reports and I have a 2-yr old charge off from American Express, it's only for $422.00. So I sent American Express a letter through PlanetFeedback basically stating that this account was not mine and to please correct their information and submit the changes to the credit bureaus. Today, I received a reply to call their Credit Bureau Reporting Unit to further discuss.

So, my question is...is this a trick ? Has anyone had any success with calling American Express and having a charged-off account taken off your report ? Or do you think it would be best to settle for let's say 40% of the $422.00 past due amount ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you ever tried disputing this with the reporting agency?

Is the account really yours, or are you just hoping for deletion? :)

    THIS IS IMPORTANT

yes, this account is mine. i had initially disputed it with the CRA's and they came back with it verified as mine. i guess i would prefer to have this deleted from my credit report without paying, but not sure if i have a chance doing that. if at all, i'd settle to pay for 40-50% of the 422.00 past due amount.

should i call the credit reporting bureau unit of american express as they suggested ?

I was able to negotiate the deletion of a charged-off account with AMEX AFTER I had paid it in full. It recently re-appeared on my report with a positive rating, paid as agreed, account closed at consumers request. I really would try to negotiate with them for deletion. Tell them you realize your mistake and are willing to accept responsibility for it, that you wish to put this whole thing behind you so you'll pay in full as a measure of good faith...and also stress that alot of people walk away from their obligations and never pay and that you will and that shows your responsibility, etc, etc...and then kindly ask for deletion. That's what I did and I got deletion. Doesn't hurt to try! Good luck!

I know American Express offers a program where they will give you a new account once you pay the old account in full. No settlement will be accepted if a new account is going to be issued. Only payment in full.

If you ever hope for a new account with American Express you will need to pay the balance in full.

The black list at American Express has a long lasting memory!

Thanks for everyone's reply. What I'll do is offer to pay the $422.00 in full and in return request to have the status of this on my credit report to payment in full. I might even ask to have a new account opened up, still unsure about this though. I just want to have the negative status removed from my credit report.

So, do you think it's safe to propose this over the phone with American Express as suggested by them on PFB ? Or do this in writing ?

    Thanks again!

I also have a CRA reporting issue with AMEX. Have you been dealing with the collections unit in Ft. Lauderdale? Which contact # did they give you? Thx.
