....check your ID when paying with a credit card. Weird example yesterday: Purchased $180 worth at Walmart, no long lines, with a credit card. Cashier never asked me for an ID.
On my way home bought a pizza to go - $15 - ID required
    ?????

Generally they do not check an ID. Not to alarm you, but be very careful and "watch" people when giving ID as well. There are scams out there where places like pizza parlors have taken pictures of CCs and IDs w/camera phones. That way they have all the information.

I'm sure this didn't happen to you, but just an alert to be careful these days, the tactics used in ID theft are quite clever and sophisticated now.

If it's MasterCard or Visa, their agreement PROHIBITS them from asking for ID as long as the signature matches the one on your card and the card is swiped and approved.

If it won't swipe or it's not approved, then they can ask.

It's also against YOUR cardmember agreement to write "see ID" on your card in place of a signature. Both your agreement and the card clearly say "Not valid unless signed."

So, as long as you have your card signed, it is swiped and approved, and the signature matches, they cannot ask for ID. If they do, they are in violation of their cardmember agreement.
