Student Loan Dilemma - and BEWARE the unemployment deferment!

So I have a clean 3 bureau report now with the exception of the student loan accounts...its a real dilemma but here is what happened - I have only one student loan, only 6500k owing. It was opened up in 1989, and repayment was to have started in or around 1992...I am now 38 years old and this thing has been on my file for the better of almost 17 years. I know factually that I paid late on or around 1993 foreward, so the "date of first delinquency' or dofd is definitely sometime in 1993. BUT, I always like a few more dollars in my pocket so I filed, several times over the years, unemployment deferments on the loan when I was temporarily out of work, etc. BUT what this did, in effect, is erase all past late payments somehow...the US Dept of Ed reports the status as PAID/NEVER LATE when you file one of those deferments...so in the end it is working against me heavily now. I would just pay the 6500 k now, but the collection status and other notations would obviously remain on the files, which I don't want.

So I called the Dept of Ed and they said I was eligible for loan rehab, whereby I make 6 on-time payments and they remove all negative notations regarding the student loan. Great idea I said to myself! So I have made 5 of the six payments and one of the bureaus is reporting the loan now as 'paid/never late' and I see the little 'ok' bars in the credit report..BUT..somehow over the years this one student loan has merged into 2 (and in the case of Experian, 3) tradeline reports...each one says something different, and I think it has to do with the insured portion of the loan, etc. So basically one line says paid, never late, the other says that it is a charge-off/collection, and the third one (only on Experian) has a notation 'claim filed for insured portion of loan by government'. SO WHAT DO I DO NOW?? Basically the great idea of 'loan rehab' gave me another, shorter dated positive tradeline (not too bad but not great either), but all of the negative stuff also remains as a different trade line since it is viewed as the insured portion of loan or whatever the heck it is.

Anyone have experience/success in acquiring proof of those late payments I made around 1993? Or have they been completely wiped out by the unemployment deferment? When I inquire now as to what they have on record as the dofd, they claim its 2006 or something, absolutely rediculous since I would have already been out of college in 2006 for 14 years.

Please help anyone with advice, I need to know what the atom bomb is for student loans.

    Student loan -

Anyone have an idea on this one? Also, separately, is 'NRS' a collector?
