For the past two years ... I have applied for loans, credit cards and so forth... and have been denied, denied, denied. When a company that relies on issuing credit to sell their products does a credit check on me they receive a "discrepancy of information" I've contacted Transunion (the credit bureau that has the wrong information for me) a dozen times, have sent for and sent back all the information they would need to fix my credit information. They have yet to do so. Every time i call ...i get some Indian speaking person who cant understand me anymore or less than i can understand them, i get no where.

I discovered that they had the wrong address and misspelled the road i live on. I have corrected this and now they say that there is something wrong with my social.

What are my legal options ...if so are there any at all? I'm beginning to lose hope. I am a young adult and can not even move forth with my adult life due to a small problem that a HUGE corporation wont fix. I cant even get a cell phone in my own name.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thank you

Assumption time: I'm assuming that you sent all the information CMRRR (Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested) and have the relevant receipts from that?

If so, then your next step would probably be the FTC (CRAs hate FTC complaints against them) for failure to comply or action the updated information supplied. Beyond that, it would probably be a court action, although I suspect that things might start moving once you file the FTC complaint and copy the CRA on it.

    Hope that helps some :)

TU won't move on one FTC complaint. It takes some unknown number of similar complaints to get the FTC to do anything. If you want to move on with your life in a speedy fashion - you will likely have to sue them.

Even so, file the FTC complaint - odds are your complaint won't be the first! ^^

I have a similar experience with Transunion.

When I moved cities, I switched my bank accounts to a local branch. They ran a credit check, and I flagged with discrepancies as soon as the bank checked my report, something wrong with my name. My first concern was identity theft. The lady at my bank immediately got Transunion on the phone, they verified my Id, and I thought everything was good to go. Unfortunately
My score is still very very low with transunion, like around 540, but with Equifax, it's around 630, so something is definetely wrong there.

One thing I noticed on my transunion credit report is I have a collection from 04/2007 that was paid ($160, old phone bill). What is weird is that shows paid, but in the balance column it says 09/25/08. I paid this thing over a year ago, but is it still showing open ?

That can be frustrating, I'm sure. Most of the time call centers just follow a flowchart and read from scripts. The human decision-making process has largely been stripped away.

Have you tried sending a certified letter (with signature receipt) to TransUnion? Keep your letter brief and professional. Clearly state what is wrong (eg, "Your report indicates my address as 123 Mani Street. There is no such address in my state; the correct address is 123 Main Street"). Point out that this is your third (or whatever) "good-faith effort to resolve this matter amiably" and that you "appreciate their efforts in correcting this inaccuracy". Conclude the letter with something like "I remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved without the need for litigation."

A lot of credit sites contain form letters that are loaded with direct legal threats, citations, and "tough guy" language. Don't use these. Your letter should be short and to the point. I know it's satisfying to fire off an angry letter, but all it will do is get you and your problem ignored.
