Education bill Statue of Limitation

Hi Guys-

I lived in NYC until the October 2002. During the Spring semester of 2001 I registered and then dropped courses at a local college. Although I dropped after classes began, I think that I dropped before the payment due date. Now, April 2005, I have a collection agency calling my house and demanding payment. Is there a statue of limitations on collecting this debt? In Louisiana or NY? Can they put this on my credit report and if so for how long?

Also, I've since moved from the state four years ago and have no other paperwork besides this one slip, so I do not have the "official" drop date. I tried calling but get the run around and I've looked online to find information but to no avail.

Thanks for your help.
