Help with ARC & LA Fitness

My boyfriend & I joined LA Fitness in January and ended up never going. We cancelled the direct debit and thought nothing of it, as only one of us had signed the contract (it was a joint membership) and they had asked for me to go in and sign in but I never did.

We have now been hounded with letters and phone calls from ARC debt collecters, and my boyfriend has today had a rude phonecall telling him to pay £100 up front or else he will get a CCJ against his name. Apparantly we're supposed to pay £800 for a years membership which we have never used and hasn't even been signed for by both of us!

We're at a loss of where to go from here? They refuse to tell us how much we "owe" until we have paid £100 up front!!

Can we just ignore this as we're moving house soon, or do we need to set up some sort of payment plan with them? As you can probably appreciate, it's extremely difficult to find that sort of money when you've got so many outgoings already.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.
