    Hey there!

I am in the market to purchase a notebook computer in the next few weeks. I have to say, trying to get anyone to answer questions on particular models and brands is like pulling teeth.

So far I have looked at HP 5310 and HP 5440. They are basically the same computer but the 5440 has a DVD rom (which I will never use.)

I also have the option to buy a notebook from a local business that is purchasing new ones. (My boyfriend uses the one I want to buy). It is used, but suits my purpose.

All I want to do is a little word processing, database work and maybe play solitaire or something.

Any suggestions on what I should do? I want to be able to use it for graduate school also and that is a few years off.

    TIA!!!

I just bought a new Notebook. It's a Compaq. Although I think Compaq full sized PC's suck my new Notebook is NICE. It's a low end bussiness machine. The model name is Armada.
Anyway I have to tell you that if you like the one your boyfreind has then get it. All notebooks are not created equal. Just because machines has the same stats (Processor, memory HD) don't mean they will perform the same. My last machine had a really bad achitecture which made is very slow although it had a fast processor. Errors were very common also. This new machine performs like a desktop. Whatever you get throw a little more memory in it. Memory cost nothing these days.

Compaq sucks big time. They promise one year support but if you want to talk to a live person, it will cost you $59.99 per call. The support is online. I sent them a detailed explanation of my problem. They sent me a very generic answer that could be used to answer almost any problem - try some new software, add more ram, try replacing your hard drive, add an upgraded processor. In other words, their help is useless.

I have both a HP and a Compaq, both purchased about the same time and with similar configurations. The HP is far superior.

    Stay away from Compaq.

My husband just got a Dell Inspiron 4000 notebook July 5th(www.Dell.com) and he loves it (before he made his final decision he checked consumers reports). Our desktops at work and home are Dells also. the fact that you can go and custom configure your system appeals to him and the service has been first rate. Buy "up" if you want to use the system in graduate school. They have online customer service to assist you through the entire purchasing process. good luck with your purchase...

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. You are actually more help than the sales clerks at 3 different stores! If I don't get my boyfriend's computer, I am shopping online for sure!

    Thanks again!
