I know that taking out new credit is temporarily hurtful to your scores.

Does this apply to student loans, too?

Do mortgage lenders look at student loans in a different way than, say, credit cards or auto loans?

im not aware of a negative impact from a student loan unless in collections or not in repayment. yes they do look at them differently as in if you have a large amount of student loans out vs. a 40k car loan.
