I have a relative who is willing to add me as an AU to one of their credit cards. Their scores are near 800 and they always pay in full every month, so carry no balance and have low utilization on their cards. What would they need to do to add me as an AU? How long does it take to get added - and how long until the card issuer reports to the CRA's? Does it make any difference for my score how long they have had the card? (Like 5 years or 2 years?) Which cards report AU's? I have read other posts and see that some cards do not do this. I know her favorite card is Discover - does anyone know if they report AU's? Would she have to ask the card issuer to report - or do they do this automatically? Thanks!
Others will chime in, but here is my take: They would have to call up the credit card company, request a card in your name, and tell them to make you authorized user only. Make sure that they really only make you AU and not a joint card holder. Once a card is issued, should be just after they make that call. Sorry don't know how long it takes the creditor to report you as AU, and what kind of past history would be reflected on your cr.
As an AU it will report from the beginning of the card inception, ie the original date opened, all entire payment history, etc. As far as how long it takes, it will vary from creditor to creditor, and the timing of the addition of the AU compared to the reporting cycle of the particular creditor.
. Actually - how is that possible since the AU's SS number is never revealed, but only a name. Assume you want to make John Smith an AU - with no SS # revealed, do millions of John Smiths all of a sudden become AUs?
They can report based on name and address alone if they want. This is the reason disputing addresses can help things fall of your report when they are disputed. They fall off since they can no longer confirm that it is you.
For security purposes I think they would need the card holder's address to send the card to, from where you would have to activate the card over the phone that the original card holder has on file with the credit card co. on every new card there is a sticker "you must activate from your home phone". Assume the original holder listed 123-456-7890 on their original application, or updated that # as being 124-456-7890 since originally receiving his/her first card with the cc - you would have to activate your card from/through the # the creditor currently has. Make sense???
When the customer requests that the AU be added, they often ask if the address is the same or different. And, believe it or not, you CAN activate a card from other than your home phone. You just have to know the right answers to a series of questions. When I traveled a lot I often grabbed the mail and took it along and activated from elsewhere. Just because they say to call from your home phone doesn't mean it won't work if you don't--it just won't be easy.
First of all, some creditors ask for the Social. Secondly, those who don't typically match it by address. So, if you have a creditor who doesn't ask for the social, then you better find a way to get the right address on your report. And, then, third, sometimes it just magically appears if one knows what they're doing . . .
I thought these were obsolete and no longer show up on your credit report. My finance added me and then I did some research, everything I have read said that authorized user no longer helps credit.
AU won't help after the FICO-08 rules go into effect. The thing is, we don't know when or if they will ever go into effect.
Google FICO 08 - ECOA. Much to this topic that most people are not seeing. For what it's worth, Equifax has stated that they will not allow the model to be applied to their data. My suspicion is that if one credit reporting agency won't use it, what good does it do anyone to have the other two use it. Just my two cents . . .
Well, She added me today - and they did not ask for my SS#. I will try to get her address added to my reports as a previous address. Any idea on how best and quickest to get that done? Thanks everyone!
