Does anyone know if car insurance companies do a hard pull or a soft pull when they quote you for a policy?

Should be a soft pull. It is not that you're applying for credit. They just want to see who they can screw over with higher rates. Some states allow this BS profiling, others don't. Call your state's dept. that oversees insurance companies and ask them that this profiling method is even allowed in your state.

    Mine was a HP.
I also had looked at a new Jeep, and NEVER went for a loan.
The next month I got FOUR HP's from various auto credit companies.
I got them all deleted and sent off a complaint letter to the dealership and to BBB and FTA and AG, FWIW.
I will let you guys know if I get a H or S as I just got some new car insurance.

Yes, most insurance company inquiries will be a hard pull, as they also calculate your credit score.
