Ok I got this letter today, Advanta is no longer on any of my credit reports and has not been for years because its about 10 years old. Nothing about this FV-I inc or any thing about this is on my account now. So what should I do about this or what can they do. The account has been off my report for years?

Send them a letter telling them that this debt is past the statute of limitations (after checking your state laws and making sure it really is) and that they should cease all contact and collection activities.

Fight 'em on quality (and existence) of documentation and chain of custody and ownership before using SOL.

It keeps the forms 1099-C to a minimum.

Good point. The new law with 1099s does make it important to not admit that debt is yours.

The law is by no means new.

It would be hard to call even the enforcement thrust on the law new (came about more or less about the time of Dubya's first term).

But it takes a long time to whip JDBs into compliance ... and that's why debtors are only being hit with this in the last couple of years.
