First of all, this site is AMAZING. I wish I had found it before I called the collection agency. My apologies if this is long winded, but any advice would be helpful, since I'm in a panic about what to do. I

had a store cc that was closed in 2003. It has since been bought and sold and on my credit report is scheduled to remain open until 2010. It is now with an agency in IL. I have been in and out of unemployment and years ago did try to negotiate with original account but they wouldn't work with me. So now the debt has increased by thousands of dollars, as expected.

My huge mistake was calling them and acknowledging my SS# and that I did once have the account now in collection...so essentially I have validated the account. Ugh! They tried to verify my address, which I am no longer at nor have been for quite some time. This also explains why I knew nothing about the judgment and account freeze. Luckily I also *67 the call so they can't get back to me and gave them no further info, but I think the damage is done. In my shock about learning of the judgment/account situation I did scream at them and since I can't pay the debt there was no resolution. Meanwhile, I had my work stop direct deposit. The bank won't provide me with any further information besides the phone number. I googled the firm and they are apparently really shady and on a few consumer "watch lists." I am in NY now as are the collectors. I don't know what's going on because my bank won't give me any info besides their phone # and that they went to court and are suing me I think.

What options do I have at this point? Will they start garnishing my wages? I would prefer to quit my job than have that happen as I work at a small company and everyone would find out about the situation. Any help/tips/advice would be appreciated. I have already learned so much about this nightmarish process from this forum.

Are they suing you now, or have they sued and won? A couple of states allow for assets to be frozen pre-suit. There's a term for it, I just haven't had any coffee to think what it called.

thanks for your nice replies. I checked with both small claims and civil court (bc its a large sum of $) of the city I live in, neither has a record of a judgement against me. I found someone at the bank with more info said the info they see is a legal notice putting a restraining order on the account. does this mean a judgement may not have def been applied? could the law offices have applied for one in the town they work in?

You could check in the city of the law office, also check and see how long the order is for,i'm not an attorney but without a judge i don't see how they could freeze your account. You should ask to see the order. You could try to get it dimissed.I would think they would have to show cause but i'm not an attorney.Hope someone who's more into the legal aspects will post.
