Hi, I thought I was relatively okay with identity theft since I subscribe to a credit monitoring service with Amex and check my credit reports/scores on a monthly basis. I'm also in the early process of buying a home (just looking for now) so have been monitoring to make sure I will have no problems getting approved for a mortgage. So guess what happened today?!! I look at my credit report and noticed my score plummeted from 700 to 585!!! I look at all 3 credit reports and found that Experian all of a sudden has a bunch of accounts, including a mortgage(!) in default that is not mine!! The other two reports are accurate with scores still in 700. I recall reading on the forums to always dispute by snail mail as opposed to online. Has anyone been through this? I am seriously freaking out here!!! ~m
Just settle down.you need to plan your next course of action. All these people have identify theft programs. You need to call your local police and report an identify. To get a case number. Then go from there.
Dispute all the information that are not yours as "not mine" with the credit bureaus. If they come back as "verified" raise hell with the outfits that are reporting the info. to the credit bureaus.
If the mortgage is in default, and is just now appearing for the first time, this doesn't sound like identity theft - it sounds like a mixed file. Would you consider your name somewhat common?
Hey everyone - thanks for replying! Good news - I contacted Experian and it turns out you were right jlynn - they mixed my file with someone else. They fixed it immediately - I pulled up my report today and all is well! Thanks again for your support!
