Anyone heard of CPNs? Are they legal and can they really give people with bad credit a second chance?
This is from Wiki Answers - " The Credit Privacy Number is a nine-digit number that has the exact same genetic makeup of a Social Security Number. This is not a government issued number like an EIN or TIN. This number is NOT a new social and NOT a tax ID or EIN. It is simply an available file number at the credit bureaus that can have financial information reported. You have the right to establish this number only once, so do not abuse it. This explanation is not here to advise anyone to misrepresent your Social Security Number, as you are completely responsible for any debts you incur using your Credit Privacy Number. In addition, the CPN is used by celebrities, congress members/government workers, and witness protection reasons. For example, celebrities use it because the media can use their SS# to track what they are buying and where they are simply by tracking their credit cards. Further, in example, congress holds special privileges to the law; therefore, their privacy needs to be protected. In another example, witnesses under protection can be located if they use their true social security number for transaction. This is the reason why there is the existence of a Credit Privacy Number program. Legality of the CPN: Presently, federal law allows the ability for someone to legally use a private ID # for financial reporting purposes instead of a Social Security Number. Title 5, Section 7 of Publication Law 93-579 of Government Organization and Employees Act..." There is more on the site and elsewhere.
They are illegal. The section of "law" all the scam CPN sites like to quote was never codified. Look around the sites. You have to send emails to an internet email address like yahoo, and none of them will provide a business address. Run, run very fast. Save your money and work on your real credit report. I would hate to see you end up with the SSN of a dead person, or a child that has never had the need for their SSN.
When i worked Sen nelson came into the store and he used his own information to apply for credit, most Senators want to be known so they get good service, same with hollywood but they use a different name to check into a hotel, their ego's prevent them from wanting to be unkown.
And somehow, I have enough faith remaining in our govt, to believe that those in the Witness Protection Program are issued new, legitimate SSN's.
It goes much, much further than that. Not only are they issued new legitimate SSN but also new birth certificates, driver's licenses and more. If married the spouse also gets the same treatment and if there are children they are also covered with a complete new identity matching that of their parents so that the entire family gets total new identity. These identities will survive any investigation except an identity check by police for looking for past criminal records. They will even survive an immigration check if the protected witness is an illegal immigrant. They don't want their witness getting deported back to some foreign country in the middle of their investigation and subsequent trial(s). They can only be found out if they get caught committing some new felony. How do I know all that? I once knew a person who was convicted of a drug crime and served time. He was an illegal alien who came here as a child with his parents but never got his papers. He married a lady who was also here illegally and they had two children at the time. He agreed to cooperate with the prosecution of other members of the gang after he got out and was awaiting deportation to Mexico. They offered to keep him from getting deported and protection for him and his whole family and he took it. They were moved to another city and I met him and we became friends. He told me all about it one day. He still lives under that assumed name and so does the rest of the family except his ex wife. She later remarried an American citizen but still does not have her papers.
LOL - I was being a smart a$$ about the WPP. I was making a point about how unrealistic (read stupid) some of the claims about CPNs are.
