I disputed a $196 collection charge from 10/04 through annualcreditreport.com last month. Not only did the charge come back as valid, it is now up to $749. What gives? I have the copy of the original report from my dispute last month that shows the $196 charge. Do I dispute this with the CRA?

You woke up a sleeping giant, they added on interest and some sort of fees, you can dispute the balance with the ca and ask how they came up with that figure.

Actually, I know what happened. What threw me is the add'l charges came from another source. The CA partners with a slumlord and an attorney who sue all former tenants in SUPERIOR COURT for these piddly amounts.

I disputed this 10-04 and thought that was the end of it. As soon as I moved out of state in 2007, they sued me in Superior Court for $200. In a last ditch attempt (with 20+ pages of documentation against the slumlord), I signed a POA and had my mom go to the hearing. The superior court judge greeted the attorney by name and it was over in 2 minutes. The attorney for the CA did get a judgment against me for $500. (He must be so proud to have gone to law school to win $500 judgments against mostly junkies on welfare with no money @@).

The judgment has never appeared on my CR and I am unemployed and live 1600 miles from the Co where it was filed.

My question is the $196 charge is now out of the SOL. The judgment happened in 2007 so it is not.

Judgements don't have the same SOL as other debts--either for reporting or collecting.

The SOL for collecting depends on the state. Many are eight to ten years, and can often be renewed simply by filing a renewal and paying a fee.

I believe the reporting SOL is 10 years, but I'm not positive on that so someone else can jump in.

If the $196 was included in the judgment claims - it alone does not exist...
