Hi all, I just pulled my husband's credit report and found that three of our adult daughter's collections are on his report. Her social security number is also listed as an alternate SS number for my husband on his report. Where do I start to get this corrected? THANKS!
I should also mention that all three of these are medical accounts from a car accident that she had 3 years ago. Not sure if that makes any difference with how to proceed. Thanks.
Possibly, but it's why it's on his reports. You said she was in a car accident. Whose fault? There may be coverage from auto insurance. If not, and your insurance didn't pay, you would probably be the person they'd turn to because they had the insurance information. But if your daughter is an adult, she might be responsible. Did you sign anything when she went to the hospital?
It was the other person's fault. Yes there is coverage from auto insurance but it was a serious accident and my daughter had injuries and so it is still in court. No we did not sign anything when she went to the hospital. Thank you for any help that you can give. I am afraid to dispute or do anything before asking here.
I had something like this happen to me, the hospital found my name from an earlier visit that I was responsible for so they just sent me the bill long after my son had grown up and was on his own. The CA is just "following orders" so they'll only tell you to send money, which is why you need to start with the office who originated the bill. I would call the original source of the bill (i.e. the doctor's office, hospital billing center, etc.) and start from there telling them there's been a mistake, that this is not your bill, this is not your responsibility and you want it taken out of collections and off your credit report.
Thanks ccbob. That makes sense to call the original source. Sounds silly I know, but with all of the new laws, I was afraid to contact anyone at all before coming here first. This board helped me a ton oh maybe ten years ago and I was so happy to see that it is still here and active. Can I ask about her SS number being on my husband's report? Can I dispute that as not his with the CRA's?
You can, but start with the provider. The CRA just sends an e-mail to the source of the tradeline asking, "Is this information correct?" so, if you haven't talked to them first, the source is likely to just look at their records and say "Yes, it is."
