My husband has a credit card collection that is right at the point of falling off of his credit report. It was sold once or twice. The last one to have it was Arrow Financial Services. Actually according to the free annual report we get it shows the OC and the CA to fall off 01/2010. Now he has received a letter from another CA, Northland Group Inc, stating that they have been assigned for collection. What do I need to do? I mean this is about to fall off his CR and I dont want another sitting out there for the 7 yrs. The specifics are as follows: OC DOFD - 2/2003 Amount of chg off - $579 Assigned to Arrow Financial Past due amt went up to $1071 Assigned to Northland Group Past due amt went up to $1201.87 offering to settle for $180.28 I have no intention of paying it this late in the game, especially since this was pre-marriage to him. Just want all this to go away. I am just certain that this is a scavanger collector that just wants some money out of it. Any advice on what needs to be done? Thanks in advance!
The first thing you should do whenever you get a debt collection letter is send a DV (dispute and request for validation). If the collection shows up on your credit report, dispute the entry with the credit bureau (after you've sent the DV letter). After the original entry falls off, then dispute any other collection entries with the credit bureau to remove them as well.
So, the original entry falls off after 7 years and 180 days have elapsed. What do you suggest someone would use as a reason to dispute the remaining entries?
The corresponding collection entries should be aged off the same DOFD, so if they, too, don't fall off at about the same time, they should be disputed as "obsolete."
