How can a person go about opening an out-of-state account? Would a credit union based out of state but with bank locations in your state count? What about internet banks like e-trade and ING?

As long as you're a US citizen, you can open a bank account in any state. Just find a bank you want to do business with and call them up.

If you're simply looking for a place to stash cash, I think online savings accounts are by far the best choice. In addition, online savings accounts with companies like HSBC or ING are often domiciled in a state other than that in which you live.

For example, I'm in WA and I called about one of my online savings accounts the other day. I called the toll-free number for WA accounts first, and then I was told by the CS rep that I had to call a different number because my account was actually a NH account. Of course, they were closed already because it was too late on the East coast :).

LOL. I guess it's two-fold. I want to be able to pay bills AND stash cash. How is it that creditors will not be able to find out all of open accounts? Wouldn't they just search by your social security number to find them?

Yes, sooner or later they will probably find any bank you do business with through use of your social. The way to get around that problem is with an anonymous corporation that nobody can get any information as to who actually owns the corporation. Get an EIN and that will never show up on a search for your social.

Of course that forces you to get into some kind of business to make it work. That isn't hard to do and might even end up getting you some extra cash. Lots of other advantages to having a corporation too.

Online savings accounts will allow you to pay bills as well - up to 6 transfers per month. But Cap1 is right, sooner or later your account will likely be found since it's tied to your SSN.

Finding a bank account by searching using a social is a myth.

They gotta do a lot of legwork ... or trick you into accepting a "trojan check".

I can't prove you wrong on that but on the other hand I would like to challenge you to prove that statement as being correct. Even if you are correct the point you make is totally irrelevant. It makes no difference whatever whether it is done by means of a ssn check or by means of a name check which they can do as well. Whatever their means to accomplish their goals may be they still get the job done.

Nit picking over how it gets done goes nowhere because people on your forum or this forum or any other forum need only to understand that their accounts can be frozen easily and they need to take such precautions as they deem necessary to keep them from grabbing any money. That is the point, the whole point and nothing but the point. Forewarned is forearmed. That is all that counts.
